Which cellphone carriers do you use for the people who travel between Vancouver and Seattle often?

May I ask a question here (not making a different thread)?
What cellular standard is used in Canada (I mean GSM or CDMA or smth else?).
And do you use SIM-cards or they are built-in inside a phone?

Bell and Tules (CDMA) in Canada are the same as Verizon in US. Fido and Rogers(GSM) are the same with AT&T in US.

My original question was to ask: do people use another phones (because the phone is locked with a carrier) or just use different SIM card?
