Good point.
In my opinion, many (maybe most) urban and suburban meat-eaters would switch to a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle if they had to kill and/or exploit the animals themselves. It's just too easy to forget, or never think in the first place, when you buy dead meat in the supermarket.
Some years ago, my grandparents were given a turkey for them to feed it and kill it so that the whole family could eat it on Christmas Eve. They were born and bred in a rural setting where both of their families had a
self-sufficient living which included routinely killing animals, but when they got married they moved to the city and have only returned to the countryside on family holidays, etc.
Despite their past, when after a few weeks of feeding and taking care of the turkey it was time to kill it (well... Him, not it), they were completely unable to. They were so fond of him that the mere thought of killing him made them cry. Instead of keeping him for themselves, unfortunately, he was gifted to some farmer relatives who, I guess, did kill and eat him.
My grandparents, who love meat, would have gone vegan rather than kill the turkey themselves. They can't see living animals as objects or raw material anymore.
