The Internet is buzzing about Congress/Obama lifting a ban on slaughtering horses for meat. People are outraged about it, saying, "What's next? Dogs?"

I just don't get it. Why is it okay to eat cows/pigs/goats/lambs/chickens but not horses? I guess I need to read that book about "Why We Wear Cows, Eat Pigs, and Love Dogs," but not sure I can handle that back.

I don't get it either. It makes no logical sense. It is totally arbitrary.

I have no doubt most of us have eaten horse meat w/o even knowing we've eaten horse meat.

I don't think those people get it either. Emotional knee-jerk reactions are generally not logical.

More slaughterhouses is not what we need....more humane humans would be much more welcomed and appreciated. Very few slaughterhouses actually make it humane for any kind of animal before slaughter. Work at one and get back to me.

Some people don't eat fish, some people don't eat pigs, some people don't eat horses.

The only thing that's hypocritical is when one person judges what another does. We are none of us perfect.

It always seemed incredibly stupid to me that we euthanize approximately 3,000,000 dogs and cats in animal shelters each year and destroy the remains. It would be infinitely better to freeze them and process them into food for third-world countries. This might be distasteful to some, but wasting protein like that is criminal.

I'd love to see a law where people who eat meat are required to kill it and clean it themselves. Lots of people would become vegetarians pretty quickly. Our current system makes it too easy to eat dead meat that has been psychologically divorced from the living creatures that produce it.

Eating horses is no worse and no better than eating cows or pigs or sheep. It's taking a life UNNECESSARILY, which is a mortal sin in my book.

And no, I'm not vegetarian, but I would like to be, for just this reason.
