Veganism is definitely extreme and should really only be a personal choice...your baby is not old enough to choose.

I don't even like vegetarianism (my daughter is one) - most people don't realise that there are certain cancers that are more prevalent in vegetarians. Linda McCartney anyone?

I'd really like to see more study done, but in the meantime, don't inflict your extremism on a growing baby!
Actually, the main dietary cancer risks are meat products: processed meats, meats containing nitrites, charred meats, and red meat.

Human breastmilk is designed for human babies.
That is correct.

In general the word "dairy" can be used in a number of ways. It can be a place where milk designed for one type of animal's young is stolen for the use of people. It is also a place where milk is processed - YES PROCESSED - for human consumption.

It refers to the consumption of milk and milk products from other animals, and also to eggs, by certain religious groups and by dietitians.

Human milk is not consumed by adult humans. Nor is goat's milk by adult goats.

It becomes "dairy" when it is processed, and packaged for the consumption of another species.

Human beings are the only mammals who eat the eggs and mild of other mammals.

The liquid that comes out of a woman's breast for her baby was made by that mother for that child.

YES YES YES!!! And THAT is what my mom and Aunts ate a lot of in the 60s and 70s.
I am not the only one of my generation who has this strange incidence of cancer.

Before the post war period, meat was restricted - two wars and a great depression did that.

After WWII America, and I suspect some other countries, went on a meat eating frenzy. Factory farms took over family farms and mass quantities of meat were available to average people.

And heart disease and cancer peaked.

So no, I'm not going to be made paranoid about Tofu or a veggie hot dog. Not by anyone.

We've gotten a bit off-topic here, so let's (please) get back to the ^^ original question ^^.

Thanks!

Thanks for your responses, my SIL is not the one who is concerned I am. I was not raised vegetarian so I was just curious. She does not make her own veggie burgers or sausage but I will assume she is monitoring the sodium content. I will also assume she has consulted with her pediatrician because she is good about doing that. He will be a year old July 11th. He only started solid foods 2 weeks ago. She stopped giving him breast milk when he was 8 months old. He drinks formula now.By the way she is a not a true vegetarian/Vegan because she goes through spurts where she becomes vegan/gluten free then switches back to eating meats, dairy and foods with gluten in them.I think being vegeterian or vegan is fine I just wasn't sure if it was ok for children who are just starting out eating puree or solid foods.

My son is now 18. He was raised Vegetarian and at 16 adopted a strict Vegan diet.

The relatives were all concerned that he'd be scrawny and weak. One suggested brain damage!
These are the facts - he graduated HS last week with honors. He is 6'2" and well built. He runs, hikes, skates, snowboards, and surfs. His complexion is clear. He attends university in the fall.

My daughter is adopted from an Asian country where people are not that tall. Unfortunately, I did not nurse her. She did not chose to be a vegan, but adheres to a vegetarian diet. She is 5'5" which for her ethnicity is tall, she has clear skin and silky hair. She is a gymnast and cheerleader. She is 16.

Neither child experienced the ear, nose or throat infections of their friends. They have no allergies.

I credit my daughters height with the fact that she has never eaten meat. Studies show that the hormones present in meat are causing an earlier onset of menarche in girls. After their first period girls grow on average 1 1/2 to 2" at best.

I would not worry about veggie burgers. Yes, they are processed, but they are not loaded with hormones, and they are a clean food. We do not live on veggie burgers but they are always in my freezer as are other meat analogs.

I worry about my nephews and nieces who are being raised on fast food and meat!

Chicken, and the specific hormones fed to it, is, according to a dermatologist and non veg acquaintance, is responsible for break outs and skin allergies. The only flesh food her teens eat is fish. Not farm raised.

Worry more about the fast food nation and the national epidemic of obesity in children.

I really think that your nephew is fine!
Thanks . He is a very Healthy baby and he has never gotten sick and so far has no food allergies.

Everything else is supplemental and for taste/growing into regular food.

"Food for fun till he's one."

Babies the world over have survived and thrived without ever eating meat their entire lives.

I don't think vegan is a healthy diet for ANYONE. But veggie is fine.
ITA!

Breast milk is best for babies...
Babies from most world would also been on breast milk longer than here (culture difference) eg. especially when the moms needs to go back to work would make that kind of hard even with milk pumping.

I do not think vegan is a healthy diet for anyone either...
The family friend my DH grows up with belongs to the Seventh Day Adventist... their son have problems with walking & his legs (cramping) on total vegan diet (no meat, not even fish) for years...
So yah... consult a doctor for best options... maybe take some daily vitamins or something.

Actually, Seventh Day Adventists lead very healthy lives. When I first got into the health care field numerous research studies used them as the model because the average SDA had a longer lifespan by 7 to 11 years than the average American. The mosy recent study I have seen still gives them a 4 to 7 year advantage, and that was in 2005.

But as you said, best to consult the doctor. I think most pediatricians would be thrilled with a vegan diet rather than the junk food, fast food and sugary food most kids consume.
