I saw this the other day in the grocery store. Can anyone explain what this is? Please do not use vegetarian terms to do so as I am not a vegetarian and not up on your terminology.
Good question. I was just wondering that myself. I assume they only feed the chickens vegetables? Which begs the question....what else would they feed to chickens?

Their own feces. No kidding. That's what factory farms do. Purdue is notorious for it.
Chickens may be vegetarians if fed on vegetables, but that doesn't mean an egg is a vegetable. Even though eggs may not be fertilized, their purpose is to produce new life. So calling them vegetarian just misleads the public.
I would think a vegetarian egg would be an oxymoron (not to mention an impossibility). Maybe they mean unfertilised but ewwwww I'd never eat a fertilised one anyway. Ick ick ick
But when it says "vegetarian" on carton, I think it means that they are fed only a vegetarian diet.
there has been undercover videos that I have seen regarding egg laying hens in a high output/ high production egg farms
that have given ground up chicks (the males that they do not need/ they are useless to egg production) in with the chicken feed.
so when the carton actually states, "vegetarian" then if they are being honest, which we hope that they are, the hens are not fed any other animal meat, but who knows about feces!?
^I believe that practice is illegal in the US (and probably every other country rich enough to support farming on that scale) now due to fears of creating or spreading another prion caused disease. Although either chickens or pigs were unable to catch the disease unles nerve tissue with prions was diectly inserted into their brains so maybe it is still allowed for them.
Vegetarian eggs are eggs which come from hens who are fed a vegetarian diet. There are several different styles of vegetarian eggs, and many people associate them with the humane and ethical husbandry of chickens. These eggs are usually clearly marked at the grocers', and they may be more expensive than conventional eggs. Some people feel that this cost is worth it.
