To me, "militant" means something like vegans going out with machine guns to mow down anyone cruel enough to eat meat.

Good topic.

I recently became vegetarian a few months ago. I just discovered that my favorite refried beans for my burritos contain a bit of animal lard. There are vegetarian refried beans I could buy as a substitute. I will do that, but not throw out the rest of the beans I have as left overs. I have decided I don't want to be the Type I that makes sure every ingredient doesn't have a trace of animal in it.

Jello, gum, sour cream, marshmallows, cake frosting, and shredded wheat aren't vegetarian, but I'll eat them. And I think it's okay that my food court onion rings were fried in the same vegetable oil (or even lard) as some other person's chicken nuggets.

For me it's about not adding to the demand for animal products in any way. I am less concerned with incidental contact than with giving money to businesses who kill and/or exploit animals.

So, I guess you go in the "not militant" column.

My militant is more like "stubborn and hard headed" to the point that I won't even cook in a pan that held animal ingredients, nor will I wash non vegan dishes even at someone else's home. No animal based foods in my house. End of story.
