People have mentioned that Glucosamine actually works for arthritis. I'm hesitant to take things, so have the following questions:

• Is Glucosamine effective for arthritis; and

• Is the vegan variety as effective as the kind made from crustacean shells?

TIA

Right, because doctors are always so supportive of vegan anything. (sarcasm)

Are you speaking for all doctors?

They certainly can answer his second question.

Doctors in general have very little training in actual nutrition, and what they do get is often provided by meat biased sources. They are generally taught to heal diseases, not how to keep people from getting sick in the first place.

Of course I don't speak for ALL doctors, but there are countless stories out there of doctors telling people they need animals to survive (not true) and really don't understand WFPB/veganism at all.

My mother, when she was alive, had surgery for a bowel obstruction. Thank goodness it wasn't cancer. But the first meal she was served in hospital post-surgery was a fried pork chop! I could not believe it. Doctors don't have training in nutrition. Their methods are surgery and medication, with very few exceptions.

I can recount several stories where folks have gone vegan and their doctors are amazed to see that their diabetes or other diseases has disappeared...BUT THEY STILL WANT THEM TO TAKE THEIR MEDS! It makes no sense other than there is more money to be made in sick people than healthy ones.

Yes; unless they're AR activists and vegans, I'd trust doctors about as far as I could throw them. Physical therapists, too. Physicians are normally pretty sexist and ageist, as well, even the female doctors.

When I visit a doctor they are usually astonished to discover that I am in charge of my health decisions, not them. My attitude is that they are being consulted, but I am ultimately the decision maker.

Well said. My doctor is really against my becoming vegan. Even as all of my numbers improve, as far as blood test results and high blood pressure, etc. It's like she gets gleeful that my cholesterol was still high, like she is in competition with me to prove me wrong. She keeps bugging me to take meds, telling me it may be genetic - the usual arguments. I keep telling her, let's test again in 3 months, in 3 months.

And yes, there's a real push-back if you start acting in charge of your own health. Crazy. But, I really only need her to order blood tests for me now lol. Since she keeps wanting to prove to me I should be on meds, she keeps ordering them for me.
