While shopping at Kroger's today, Mrs B bought a pkg. of Kroger's Simple Truth's new lineup. It's billed as "Emerge" plant-based meatless grind. So to give it a good test, I fired up my PK charcoal grill, and made four patties, and seasoned them. I must say, the Emerge grind looks very much like ground chuck. Some vegans are put off by meaty tastes and appearances, but for us, as long as it's tasty and not bad for us, it's worth a try. These plant-based meats are not a regular portion of our diet, but occasionally we have Beyond sausages at home, and while eating out we will splurge on a Beyond burger at times, but it's really not our focus to eat processed foods. Obviously today was different, as we had Tater Tots, broccoli, and an Emerge burger. The verdict.... on a 1 - 10 scale, I'd give it a 6.5. It really wasn't meaty tasting, not bad tasting, but it tasted less like meat than it looked. Here are the nutritional numbers....
4 oz serving:
230 calories
Total fat 14 gr
Sat. fat 9gr
Cholesterol 0gr
Sodium 390mg
Protein 20gr
Not very healthy IMO, in all fairness tho, none of the commercial plant-based meats are healthy, but as a wfpb vegan, this sort of item is an occasional splurge for us. But we won't be buying this product again. My zesty black bean-barley burgers are far better.
I will say this tho, it's good to have options!

I wouldn't go so far as to say that none of the commercial plant-based meats are healthy. For a relatively healthy commercially-processed vegan burger, try Boca's Original Turk'y Veggie Burger. Each patty is only 70 calories, has 13g protein, only 6g carbohydrates, 4g fiber, 0g sugar, and only 1g fat. The only downside is that it contains 450mg of sodium.
I know that some people hate the taste of Boca burgers, and it certainly doesn't come anywhere close to the taste of Beyond or Impossible Foods products, but if you're looking for something that approximates a burger on a bun, and is relatively healthy (or at least not near as unhealthy as Beyond or Impossible burgers), then Boca's vegan turk'y veggie burger is the way to go.

MadMan, I get your point. And certainly don't dispute it, but for us, we rarely eat processed foods, so when we do splurge and have a Beyond Burger or Tater Tots for example, we should truly enjoy it, and not just fill up on so-so tasting commercially processed foods. Everyone is different with different needs, and as I said earlier, it's always good to have options.
Absolutely. And I appreciate your review even though we don't have Kroger available to us where we currently live.
I believe other Kroger-owned chains sells the Simple Truth line. But I can't recall right now which ones. So you might want to check. It is a nice line of quality products at fair or better prices.
All of these vegi-meats have a buttload of salt, and that’s before adding in the salt of condiments and toppings. I don’t see how they are healthier to eat compared to real meats.

Meat itself is bad for health, especially red meat, so by default any vegan option is healthier by comparison. I'll take the extra sodium instead of consuming meat anytime.

Kroger brand Simple Truth has really been coming out with a lot of good stuff these days. It's been my favorite brand of tofu for awhile, and they now have cream cheese, sour cream, lunch meat slices, dips, ready to bake cookies...all plant based (no dairy, no meat, no eggs). The sour cream is the best non dairy I've tried.
