As a vegan you find yourself with the option to eat something. It's just you and the food. It could be that your not an expert on how that particular dish was made, it could be foreign food, or any other scenario. Even after taking a bite your not sure if it contains milk, dairy, eggs or any other ingredient which you may prefer not to eat. You don't know if it's more likely that it is vegan or more likely that it's not. If you don't know if it's vegan are you excused to eat it. After concluding that you don't know if it's vegan is it ok to eat it?

You're the one who has decided to be vegan, and you decide for yourself what things you will eat and what things you will not eat. There is no supreme authority who has to "excuse" you if you eat something that might not be vegan food. You're in charge here.

Ask yourself: what is the worst that can happen if I eat something that turns out not to have been vegan food?

Unless you have a MD or nutritionist specifically forbidding specific foods, this is a personal choice, and something you must answer within yourself.

Apparently, you got the food from somewhere, because if you prepared it, you'd know what's in it.
So ask the cook or the waiter or your host or the salesclerk what's in it.

If that's too much trouble, then think about why you're a vegan. To protect animals? To preserve the environment? To be more healthy?'
Would you be devastated if you discovered you'd eaten non-vegan food? Then don't eat it. Follow the dieter's mantra, "When in doubt, toss it out."
Do you feel that being mostly vegan is fine, with a few less-than-perfect foods? Then eat it.

People who are vegan for ethical reasons will be more strict than those doing it solely for health, environment etc. I personally do it for all the above but will admit to sometimes eating say, baked goods, that aren’t 100% vegan just to have something to eat. It was much easier to be vegan in my previous area than it is here in the Midwest.

In my opinion, if it's already there and the option is to eat it or throw it away, you should eat it if you want. The damage has already been done since it's already been prepared.

There is no Vegan Police, you can declare yourself vegan or vegetarian and still eat whatever you want. No one cares, other than maybe other vegans that might torment you for calling yourself vegan if you told them you ate something of unknown ingredients. Unless you prepare everything yourself you are likely to get fooled at some point, maybe a restaurant where the "Vegetable Soup" contains beef broth.

You are either a vegan or you are not. Same with a vegetarian. Neither take "chances" on what they eat.

I did, but it was pretty tough being vegan 40 years ago.

OK. I would think it would have been easier back then. Less prepared/prepackaged food. But you either are or you are not. It should only matter to you.
