Default Vegan cupcakes

I bought Vegan Cupcakes - recipe book.

They refer to

non hydrogenated shortening and
non hydrogenated margarine

both in the same recipe. What's the difference?

Thanks

Shortening is 100% fat, consistsing usually of vegetable fat and vegetable oils. Margarine is an water-in-oil-emulsion, containing "only" 80% fat, similar to butter.
The difference should be pretty marginal for most purposes including baking, however in the US margarine is usually always salted while shortening is not which obviously makes for a big difference.

I would read the shortening ingredients label and if it says hydrogenated, don't get it.

I don't get what you're asking. Are you asking why they're using two kinds of fat in the same recipe? If you are, I'd say they're including the margarine for the flavor.

Maybe the shortening is referring to Crisco.

The recipe may want you to use Crisco as well as a margarine.
