A vegan consumes no animal products (including eggs, dairy, honey, etc.).

a vegetarian doesn't eat meat but does eat eggs, milk, honey, etc.
and yeah, they don't eat fish, contrary to popular belief! i like the term "pescatarian" for people eat fish but not other kinds of meat.

Vegetarians don't eat chicken, either. I've come across that belief more than once.
I also know multiple people who describe themselves as vegetarians yet do eat both fish and chicken from time to time. When self-proclaimed "vegetarians" misuse the term it certainly adds to the confusion.

it's like a weird catholic thing, people think only red meat is meat.
in my opinion, if it's muscle or organ tissue (or bones, i guess), it's meat! if it came from something with a brain, it's not vegetarian!

I've taken some great cooking classes from a local Seventh Day Adventist hospital outreach program (SDA's are vegetarian). There was a dietary specialist (forget the proper title) at one of the classes and she explained the different terms, lacto, ovo, vegan, etc. She talked about how some folks call themselves vegetarian and say that they eat fish or chicken but no red meat She said that they are "fisho- chicko- vegetarians"

It's not only about diet, either.
