I take both Coumadin and baby aspirin and eat whatever I want.
It's the Vitamin K content of the vegetables that effect clotting times, but over the period of the month between my INR tests, it all seems to average out and my readings are usually within range.
Are you saying that you take a baby aspirin and are wondering if the green leafy vegetables will predispose you to bleeding more easily?
If you don't take Coumadin and have no other issues (i.e. recent surgery, hemorrhagic stroke, intracranial bleed or aneurysm etc), it should be safe for you to take 81 mg ASA and eat green vegetables. It's the Vitamin K that interferes the with the coumarins in Coumadin/warfarin and can alter the INR.
BTW, lots of foods/ supplements predispose us to bleeding more easily. Gingko biloba, garlic, Fish Oil, Flax seed oil, glucosamine/chondroitin, vitamin E, and many more. I wouldn't worry unless you are having easy bruising or you are going to have surgery soon. And these supplements count as medications, make sure to put them on your med list and keep it in your wallet, just in case.
Far Freddy - Wow...that's interesting. My father was told to avoid aspirin when he was on Coumadin, because it would negatively affect his INR.
yellfire - My father, who is 10 years post-stroke, is administered 81 mgs of baby aspirin daily because Coumadin caused his INR to fluctuate too wildly, resulting in bleeding. I've begun to juice fruits/vegetables for myself lately and was wondering if I could give my father a green smoothie.
...My father was told to avoid aspirin when he was on Coumadin, because it would negatively affect his INR...
My doctor has me on both the 81Mg Aspirin and the Coumadin because he told me that they effect different parts of the clotting mechanism.
But, I can't take a regular dosage Aspirin, nor any other NSAIDS, while I am on Coumadin.
