I'm curious, people on this list do know that cheese, unless it's a vegetarian specialty item, has rennet in it, which is a substance from the stomachs of baby cows? Cheese is not vegetarian!!

Many cheeses do not have rennet--(including most (but not all so check the list) Land O Lakes, Cabot, Organic Valley, Sargento, Sorrento, Philidelphia cream cheese, Tillamook)..

And there's a whole thread dedicated to the new Daiya vegan cheese, which is garnering some rave reviews.

So what do you call someone who does eat dairy - I mean it may be an "animal product" but it doesn't HARM the animal to eat it.

yeah it's actually pretty uncommon these days for cheeses in the u.s. to contain animal rennet. it's pretty much only used in artisanal cheeses.

i learned that on this board!

It was in the pizza thread.

So, yes, if you want to read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/veget...getarians.html it's already been discussed. Most commercial cheese made in the US does not use animal rennet.

Unfortuantely, that means that many of the really great (imported/artisanal) cheeses still do. It's important to read lables.

Vegetarian. I have to disagree that the dairy industry doesn't harm it's animals.

I agree. Probably the more accurate phrase is that the animal doesn't have to be killed to make the product .....

What does a lacto-ovo vegetarian signify again? That you eat milk and eggs? But if "vegetarian" already means that ... okay, I'm confused.
