ke3, I think it is a great way to provide an affordable education for all, however, a number of years ago (mid 1990's) I was taking Critical Thinking (or Critical Writing?) at Moorpark College and went for about 2 weeks when the instructor asked if anybody would voluntarily drop the class so those that need it to graduate can add it. My first thought was, why did they wait until the last minute to take their required classes but I did volunteer to drop. The last thing I wanted is to stand in some student's way of getting their eduction. I was just taking it for fun. Since then I have been careful to take classes that are not full.

That sounds like a good idea. I also would not wish to stand in a student's way of completing their required courses to graduate. Critical writing? That sounds interesting. I particularly enjoy writing and thinking courses.

The first assignment, which I just finished before relinquishing my seat, take either position on the death penalty and justify your position. As soon as we turned it in, the instructor said to now take the opposite opinion and justify that point of view. I thought that was a pretty good exercise.

That definately sounds like something I would be interested in. It reminds me of the philospophy course I took at Moorpark. The instructor used to come in dressed in funky costumes, like a toga, LOL! He would assign similar tasks to us regarding taking a position and debating it.

Moorpark College has really been expanding. I took Astronomy there a while back. They now have an observatory so I imagine they have some observational astronomy classes to go with it. They are building a major nursing program. I hear they have a great Child Development program. They are will known for their EATM (Exotic Animal Training and Management). They have a large performing arts center. It is a real good school with a lot of variety.

Their nursing program is great. My exhusband graduated from there and they turn out great nurses!

As a non-traditional student (i.e. "old") I found community college rewarding at both Ventura Community College and Santa Barbara City College. I particularly liked evening attendance, where my classmates were truly my piers -- working adults (30s, 40s) each trying to make a difference in her/his life. But there was also serendipity in the experience: the interaction with the instructors. They seemed to regard us adult students with a depth of seriousness and respect that I hadn't anticipated. It fostered a rich learning experience for me.

I didn't take away all that many friends as studying and staying focused on doing my best (3.9 G.P.A. with honors) plus working full time kept me busy, but I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Many fond memories.

Well, my class (starting Jan. 10) is full again, and has been for several weeks; so I guess people are still interested. I'm grateful to still have the job, and plan to give it my all.
