Along the 101 freeway near the off-ramps for Oxnard Blvd, Vineyard Avenue, and Rose Avenue I have seen the most building up of nice new homes, apartments, and big outdoor malls. Yes, a whole foods is going in near this area too. The old "El Rio" area is very pretty, new and shiny now in many areas. This area of Oxnard is growing in leaps and bounds. One reason could be because we have a new University. California State University Channel Islands which is right at the tip of Camarillo and Oxnard at the location of the old Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Also, there are many "extensions" around Oxnard and Ventura for other Universities. This could be why more college students are living here.

Lowe's in Oxnard is NOW OPEN. What a welcome change for the old Carriage Square Center. Though smaller than Ventura's, it's still quite large. There's an O'Reily Auto Parts also in the vicinity. The setting and cool Oxnard weather creates a relaxing atmosphere. They've done an awesome job of getting in and out of the complex. It's not cluttered or chaotic, lots of space was dedicated just for Lowe's

I just went in the new Lowes today and I would say it is larger than the Ventura store although it is laid out differently. The garden department is almost twice as large and the isles in the store are longer.

Of course it was quiet with fewer customers compared to Ventura but the store is really nice and you are right it is MUCH easier to get in and out of this location with exits on all 4 sides than Ventura where you have only 2 exits and you almost need to use Mills.

This store was built new to Lowes specs so I believe it is laid out better because many of their other stores are build-outs in pre-existing store buildings. BTW, the Oxnard store looks identical to the new Lowes in Dublin, CA so I think this is their standard new store spec when they build from the ground up.

BTW, the Grand Opening is on Thursday, Dec. 1st. They did what they call a "Soft Opening" on Black Friday.

Good for me as Lowe's is not too far from me. They even sent us an invitation to come to the store along with a Lowe's card that tracks your purchases. They give you ideas on decorating or something based on items that you have purchased in the past. Can't wait to see how it works.

Wow! It's been over a year since the last post! Let me update on some new openings in our great city. We now have 3 Walmarts in Oxnard. The latest one on Saviers Rd in South Oxnard just opened about a week ago. The Walmart Neighborhood Market is in the Esplanade Center in the former Circuit City spot. A Filipino supermarket, Island Pacific, has opened on the south end of Rose Ave. There's a lot of activity now at Riverpark. The Collection is starting to open new businesses such as the Century Theaters 16, Five Guys, Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, and Panera Bakery. The place looks beautiful at night when lit. Soon to open in spring are Whole Foods and REI Outdoors outlet. More eateries to follow.
One thing I like to point out. Yes, Oxnard is still growing, particularly our Hispanic population. Yet, our crime rate has been dramatically reduced in the past couple of years! Congrats also to our new Mayor and Council members, let's celebrate 2013 with continued optimism and vitality!

Yes, so I read. Looks to be an isolated family related incident. Hopefully, the trend doesn't continue. Oxnard is STILL a largely safe growing city, considering its culturally diverse population of over 200,000.

Oxnard isn't really diverse....its predominately Hispanic.

3 Walmarts? That's unfortunate.... I think Simi is going to have 2 soon....

True, I don't know why a lot of people say its diverse. Maybe 20 years ago Oxnard was diverse, but not now.
