Regal owns the Edwards chain, and the Simi Valley 16 killed the Simi Valley 10, to the surprise of no one.

You cannot blame the politicians for the demise of the SV 10 and its inevitable sale to Tristone Cinemas, which owns similar second-run theatre all over southern California.

Regal Theatres wanted to build a brand new state-of-the-art theatre from the ground up since they'd done their homework regarding Simi Valley' s quality of living, knowing that it would turn the SV 10 into a dinosaur, and simultaneously kill the Mann Theater multiplex on Cochran, which is exactly what happened.

'Lifestyle Centers' such as the SVTC have replaced shopping malls from coast to coast as the marketplace has dictated, but I have no idea why the SVTC tanked, but apparently the housing crash & great recession of 2008 walloped Simi Valley pretty soundly.

Not sure about the "upscale" description, as the chain is limited mostly to small towns in Texas and Georgia, or places like Duluth and Scottsdale, and their ticket prices for prime time run from $7.00-$10.25.

But, here's hoping they offer SOME kind of variety---practically all the local chain theaters show the same movies, just at different times.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be anything "upscale" about this theater. It seems to be a standard priced theater with the option of being served greasy food in the theater. But that is good for the Town Center, its unlikely that a real upscale theater which has ticket prices of $20~$30 would do well in Simi Valley.

Anyhow, it will be interesting to see if the movie theater will be enough to bring back some of the retailers.
