You will be fine uptdreaded. I'm African American but I live in the neighboring Ventura County. I am also a member of a sorority that has been on the campus of University of California Santa Barbara so you'll be ok. As far as race issues, I have been in this area and have only had one incident and really it wasn't an incident. Just some stupid fool calling me the n-word but I brush that off.

Good luck!

After living in Washington, DC you will have no problems at all in Santa Barbara. It is a lovely town and very safe. Of course, like anywhere, I'm sure crime exists, and gangs are popping up everywhere, but I haven't heard of anything out-of-control in S.B. Really, it will seem like Paradise compared to D.C.

You are not Hispanic therefore you should be fine. The gang issues in SB (as with most places in CA) these days mostly center on the Sureno / Norteno conflict. The Bloods and Crips are not a factor in SB (and are a declining factor in the larger urban concentrations such as SF, Sac and LA).
