Are there any "nice" apartments in a good neighborhood for around 1K a month? I am looking to get a 1 bedroom in a nice area.

Since this is a private listing, it is going to depend on the landlord. It is a fine area though

I have not heard good things about this place at all. That part of Ventura seems to be attracting the wrong attention too.

This is a converted old hotel. It is in downtown so walking distance to everything is great. It is a small studio though. Some of the pictures on the ad are from its lobby, not from inside the unit. Worth a peek to see if it will work for you

$1000 is a tough budget so you are going to have to accept some compromises. The three listings here are all within budget so warrant some consideration.

I have not found anything in that range that is comparable to the two bedroom I have in Spokane for $750. It's nuts!

The average household in Spokane earns about half of what the average household earns in Ventura.

perhaps, but for me it is immaterial. Because my income is pretty steady within a certain range no matter where I live. I make a good living in Spokane and will not get a substantial raise when moving to Ventura, so my income may be less (due to the 9.3% income tax, Washington has none). I will get a raise to move to Ventura, but the 9.3% income tax eats it up, therefore I may have about the same or even less income after taxes. Plus a higher cost of living.

Sure the big picture makes sense but my income isn't tied to the location so for a personal decision a person has to decide what is best for them.

The question is, are the high rents worth it? Is the natural beauty, the beach, being closer to bigger cities, worth putting up with crime and a higher cost of living? (much higher)

In your situation, it may not be worth it. On average, folks simply make more here than other places. So if you can make more money than your neighbors and take advantage of the market conditions for rents, good for you. Hell, you can move to the Mojave desert and live like royalty!

I have a brother who earns well over $200k but chooses to live in the lowest cost part of CA, the Inland Empire. He has a massive home, two perennially new cars, eats out a lot, etc. Our home was more expensive than his but is less than half the size. We value being by the beach, near jobs, having our kids attend great schools, in a destination town. So there are tradeoffs.

ps If you believe the statistics, there is more crime in Spokane than Ventura (both violent crime and property crime). And the anecdotes are interesting too. I think your experience in Montalvo and seeing homeless in the park has really colored your perception! It'd be like starting in the Spokane downtown or another dumpy area and making a conclusion based on that!
