Looking to possibly move to T.O or surrounding areas...advice needed (Thousand Oaks: to rent)

We're looking to relocate to the West Coast from the East Coast and we have pretty much narrowed down to 2 areas in CA.

1) Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, possibly Agoura Hills/Calabasas.
2) Diamond Bar/Chino Hills.

Our plan is to rent for about 6 months to a year and get a feel for the area and then buy a home. We have 2 elementary kids and school is our highest priority. Been reading that Conejo Unified is highly regarded. Are the schools in this county regarded as high as say, Cupertino area schools? What parts of T.O. should we look around?
Read some poster state that Agoura Hills and Calabasas is the best place in Ventura County but turned out to be in L.A. County. How are the schools there? Any guidance would help a great deal as we have NEVER been there. Been to L.A. plenty of time but would NEVER consider raising my kids there. We are on our way to T.O. so we will have a chance to get a good feel for the area. Plan is to look at T.O. Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas. I've read that Simi Valley is a nice place to raise a family but based on greatschools.net the schools don't seem to rate as high as the T.O. schools. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Commute is not an issue as my job allows me to work from home and travel.
