Yeah, if by "nice mix" you mean a Hispanic community. Oxnard is less diverse than California as a whole and its dominated by its Hispanic community, around 3/4 of Oxnard is Hispanic. Regardless, I'm not sure why having a large Hispanic community would result in there being "a lot more to Oxnard".

Edited: Misread the OP, read "50,000 less" as "50,000" population....so the community shifts wouldn't have been that large. Mainly just more strip malls and Mc-homes as is being noted in the thread.

Anyhow, so beyond some new commercial and residential developments, what has changed in Oxnard for the OP? Not much I'd imagine. There is a larger Hispanic majority. Crime, at least as a whole, has improved a bit. But mostly its the same......

Huh? Well, admittedly, I don't know what corner of Oxnard you frequent. You seem to have a strong opinion about that corner, but that's about it. If you think the whole city is like that corner plus a beach, you're being too quick to judge and don't have your eyes open. But the more you post, the more obvious that becomes. Truth is, I know the mix that you clearly don't, so just let that stand instead of pounding mine everyone else's answers into the ground with assertions that don't add up.

My comment had nothing to do with a particular area of Oxnard, instead I was citing statistics about the city. Your claims about diversity are inaccurate, Oxnard as a whole is less diverse than California as a whole not more. Around 75% of Oxnard is Hispanic, 15% is non-Hispanic white. Doesn't leave much room for diversity does it? This information is all from the 2010 Census....are you suggesting they just looked at one corner of Oxnard? I don't get it..... But right, I clearly don't know the mix....let's ignore the fact that it takes 10 seconds to look this stuff up on census.gov:

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/0654652.html

If I was to judge Oxnard's demographics by my own observation I'd assume that it was even more Hispanic, but that is probably because I'm usually in the city proper instead of the Mc-Developments surrounding the industrial core and older parts.

I don't get it either. I was simply adding depth to the conversation, a depth that you don't seem to like! Oxnard is more than Hispanics -- who are NOT mono-cultural, by the way -- strip malls, McHouses, and, as you put it, "not much"! That's your view and opinion. Does not mean others on this board cannot add depth and perspectives that you don't have! Your view is not the only one, so just knock it off!

Oxnard is more than Hispanics? I'm not even sure what that is suppose to mean... In terms of culture the Hispanics in Oxnard are largely Mexican. Oxnard is a Hispanic working-class community, that is its defining characteristic more than anything....the existence of such and such big box retailer really doesn't tell you much which was my point earlier. Whether that is something to "like about Oxnard" is obviously up to the individual....

What depth exactly are you adding? You responded to my factual post about Oxnard's demographics by talking about "corners" and how wrong I was even though I was citing the US Census.... I still don't get what you were getting at....

SOON2B went into depth on the development side of matters and I think everyone can agree there are a number of new developments. Now, whether these developments are a positive for Oxnard is another matter..... Most were built out of the delusion of the housing bubble, after all, who builds a large strip mall with faux "high end" housing in a lower income Hispanic community? Developers drunk on cheap credit.....and city officials with little foresight.

I see more happening in Oxnard then I see happening in the Thousand Oaks area.

I see plenty of people that love living in Oxnard that could afford other cities and they seem to love it. A good friend owns a clothing company that sells in 130 nations. He could afford to live anywhere in the county, Santa Barbara or Malibu and he resides in Oxnard. He even grew up in Simi and has family in Thousand Oaks but still chooses to call Oxnard home. He says that the area has so much going for it. Not bad for a guy that has a $10million company.

Seeing as you live in Oxnard that would likely be true.....

I'm sure that there are people in Oxnard that could afford other cities, but live in Oxnard for whatever reason. But the average Oxnard resident isn't such a person....

I always find it a bit funny when people put dollar figures on small businesses, its usually referring to the business' revenue as evaluating the worth of a small business is difficult. Anyhow, owning a company with $10 million in revenue doesn't say too much about the owners financial position, indeed, they could be flat out broke if the business is leveraged. But if he likes Oxnard...good for him.

I'm not suggesting nobody likes Oxnard, I'm suggesting that Oxnard is a pretty generic place and that is at least partly because the city's officials are doing its best to make it a generic place. Big box retailers don't add novelty, often they take it away.

Oxnard had some gems it could have capitalized on...it decided to build stucco homes and strip malls.
