Default Camarillo--Plane noise and farm smell?

I am looking to move to a quiet suburban community of LA and am thinking of Camarillo. Two questions from my research so far:

1) I notice an airport near the city. How often do you hear planes flying overhead, whether from the local airport or LAX traffic? (several times an hour, once an hour, once a day?)

2) It is also around farm country. Approx. how many days of the year should I expect to smell fertilizer? (a day, a week, a month?)

Thanks!

I can't answer the questions but I was also curious about plane noise because there is the Camarillo airport and also there are many train tracks that when I viewed a place was so loud. So if noise is a concern I would look at that too. I did not a smell different from where I live in TO but I did not think about it being a farm smell.

There are three small airports, a Navy Air Station and a California Air National Guard Station in west Ventura County, so overhead plane sounds are part of the area. With all of the fields, you will also hear crop-dusting helicopters. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department have rescue helicopters based at Camarillo Airport, so expect to hear those now and again also.

Trains pass through day and night, and can usually be heard from a distance away.

As to fertilizer smell, you likely won't be confronted with it unless living directly next to a field. A bigger concern for the whole area is air pollution from the pesticide spraying, so you might look into how that's affecting your chosen area.

Both of the County run airports have noise abatement procedure for pilots.

Noise Abatement Procedures

Camarillo airport:

ALL AIRCRAFT
  • No Aircraft departures between 0000-0500 without prior approval from the Airport Director.
  • Remain as high as practical over residential areas during overflight, approaches, and departures.
  • Use best rate of climb when departing any runway.
  • No formation takeoffs or landings without prior permission of the Airports Director.
  • Utilize low energy approaches.
  • Avoid residential overflights, fly quietly and safely.
  • North traffic fly downwind over Hwy U.S. 101.
Oxnard Airport:

ALL AIRCRAFT
  • NEW - Voluntary curfew 11:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.
  • Remain as high as practical over residential areas during overflight, approaches, and departures
  • Use best rate of climb when departing any runway
  • No formation takeoffs or landings without prior permission of the Airport Director.
  • Touch and go's and stop and go's are PROHIBITED between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.(NEW - 8:00 a.m. on weekends)
  • Full stop/taxi back operations will be permitted only if the aircraft plans to depart the airport traffic area
  • No high power engine run-ups for maintenance between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Winston, thanks for the information. A quick followup:
1) If you don't live directly adjacent to a farm, does dust (and presumably pesticide) still travel in significant quantities to other parts of town?
2) Here up north we have caltrains and we only hear them when they blow their horns. is that what you mean, and is it heard all over town?
3) Here up north we also can hear planes flying overhead every 10 min. Is it the same frequency down there?

Thanks!!!
K

1) Farms: Generally speaking, the air quality in west Ventura County is good because of the prevailing on-shore winds. That said, the area is ag mixed with urbanized zone, so pesticides can be in the air where people live. If you're very concerned, you might check historical data with the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District. If you live directly next to a field, dust, smell and noise can be a factor. For the most part, the two uses (people and food) seem to co-exist well.

2) Trains: If you live next to the tracks or next to crossings, you hear and feel the trains. Once you get a mile or more away, you may hear distant horns and rumblings. The tracks are busy with both passenger and freight trains.

3) Planes: I'd say it's less than every 10 minutes. Here again, it depends on where you live. I've lived next to Oxnard Airport and the planes did bug me sometimes. I've also lived under multiple flight paths from planes leaving Camarillo Airport and traveling to Oxnard Airport. Sometimes they were loud because of their low altitude. I think the helicopters are the worst. Very loud.

Another thing, and maybe someone can confirm or deny this, but I've noticed helicopters flying along the route of highway 101. If you live near the highway, perhaps expect helicopters along with traffic noise.

We live in Camarillo, almost directly next to a farmer's field and very close to the airport and we love it. The planes are very small and I would say that unless I'm outside, I never hear them. This is not a big airport, this is a little tiny airport that mostly features people flying their own small planes. The smell of fertilizing happens maybe four days a year. Totally not a problem. Camarillo is a great small town with all the ammenities of a bigger city, with excellent access to the big cities around here. It's a fantastic family area, very safe, and has perhaps the best climate one could ever ask for. It's always sunny, and moderate. I have no hesitation HIGHLY recommending this area to anyone, especially families and people looking for a quiet, safe, and friendly area to move to.

I cannot agree more with JAM79. I've lived in Camarillo for 7 years and LOVED IT! You cannot go wrong. Tons of shopping, safe neighborhoods, easy access to L.A. or Santa Barbara, cleanliness, and a feel of a small community. My family and I will be moving back. We currently live in North Oxnard, but miss livining in Camarillo.

Airplane Noise is a part of life in Camarillo, although generally it isn't too bad unless your under a military flight pattern (all disclosed during a house purchase) - then your house may very well shake when the biggies (i.e. C-130s) fly overhead. The local airports, however, primarily service small craft, so you won't get anything close to what you'd see near LAX or Burbank airports.

Farm Country - yes, occasionally it smells like fertilizer. When the crops are ready to harvest, the air will filled with the smell of green onions, cabbage or whatever other crop is ready to be picked. On the flip side, you have abundant fresh-picked produce available at little farm stands all over the place (the strawberries are the best).
