Hi there! I am new here but have been lurking for a while. I just bought a house in the Oxnard historic district. Please tell me all the wonderful things I am going to love here. I have lived in Ventura County for some time, and in SB county before that so I know the area pretty well. I saw the lawn bowling club at Wilson Park. That looks cool, does anyone go there? I want to know about the special and kind of off beat things to do. Also, I like Oxnard and am actually moving from Ojai. I know about crime statistics and such in VC, so please no one needs to lecture me regarding gangs and crime- please let's not go there. Thank you so much. My family is very excited about our new house and neighborhood.

I much prefer Oxnard to Ojai. Two big reasons, the weather and access to everything.

Enjoy the move

Thank you jw2. I do love Ojai, but my family of surfers is drying up up here. I will miss the mountains, but it is easy enough to come back here to hike, camp, and see friends.

If you just moved contact the city and get a copy of upcoming events. I think that they sent the booklet with this months water bill. It includes things that are happening during the next 3 or 4 months I think. http://www.oxnardrec.org/Uploads/201..._Guide_Web.pdf

You will love the concerts in the park this summer. They take place in the Heritage Square in downtown Oxnard. You can pay for seating inside the area or free lawn seats around the outside. People bring wine, food and enjoy the music. Also, the first Thursday (evening) of each month, there is a big gormet food truck gathering. It's gotten very popular and now is going to be on the Elks club parking lot. There are some good restaurants downtown too. "The Kitchen" was on Diners Driveins and Dives and I've heard great things about "Sugar Beets."

The Wilson neighborhood is one of my favorite anywhere. I like to go there and just walk, maybe over to downtown, Plaza Park, up and around B and A Streets. Keep any eye and ear out for the plans of Campus Park (H Street). The vision is of Oxnard's own Golden Gate or Central Park, including a proposed Japanese tea garden on the side that faces the Buddhist Temple. If you like the arts and international films, keep this in mind: DownTown Center for the Arts. From your new neighborhood, Fresh & Fabulous in the beautiful old Woolworth building is a hop skip and a jump: http://myfreshandfabulous.com/.

Thanks everyone! I am having a little bit of anxiety about the move, so I really want to hear the positive about Oxnard. I am glad to be in a neighborhood that is very walkable.

I predict that you will love it. I was in the Wilson neighborhood just today. Love it there.

Welcome to Oxnard. I love F Street during Christmas time for their decorations. Plenty of local festivals take place at Plaza Park near 5th Street.

Well, my house fell out of escrow. The people buying my house in Ojai could not secure their financing. So, I cannot buy my historic house now. I really liked the street we were buying on, but it did bother me some being able to walk to La Colonia. So, for now I will commute. However, in the future I may likely recast the net and go house hunting again. Previously I had found a house very close to the beach in Port Hueneme I liked, but I am wary of the crime/ sex offenders in that area. We are total beach rats though, so I realize living by the beach means there will be some "grittiness", even in Huntington Beach and Pacific Beach where we used to live this was true. I don't want to commute from Ojai forever, so hopefully I will find something safe and suitable for our needs.
