I live in Ventura and plan to downsize in the near future from a house to a condo. As I begun looking at condos and townhouses I came across age restricted (55+) developments like Leisure Village and Hueneme Village.

Having not been aware of senior communities before, I'm wondering what are the advantages (or disadvantages) of ownership in such a community. Why would someone choose to live in an age restricted community as opposed to a similar unit in an unrestricted community nearby? Other than the obvious difference in the age demographic, what's the advantage?

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Quieter, safer, much less traffic in complex, and activities and interest groups tailored for age. Some have loose medical supervision. Being with mostly retired people means you have time to get to know your neighbors, go on walks, play golf. No gang problems, graffiti. People tend to buy and stay.

Thanks for the reply. +55 communities do sound desirable, so I'll keep them on my list as I look some more.

You might like these. Mix of condos and small houses. Gated, newer, brighter, and a great view. Drove around there, seemed very nice.

the original poster should probably research the retirement forum and perhaps post this thread there. There are probably lots of similar questions asked on that forum.
