Thousands Oaks and the entire Conejo Valley is a beautiful place to live, but it is true family oriented suburbia. There are some condos on the lake in Westlake and there is a more pedestrian feel to it than Thousand Oaks proper, but if you're looking for more of an "in town" location, you may want to consider the beach communities of Channel Islands Harbor or Ventura. They have a resort feel to them, and offer lots of things to do. Also It's generally no more than a 30-35 minute commute to Thousand Oaks, and on the weekends you are within a half hour to 45 minute drive to Ojai and Santa Barbara, both which are great destinations for a day of fun.

Um, 30 minutes with NO traffic to the harbor. Could easily be double that during rush hour.
