I'm sorry to contradict you, but I think you're confusing programs.

SSI is Social Security for the disabled without enough work credits and very limited resources. SSDI is Social Security for the disabled with enough work credits. Both require a medical/legal evaluation. Some do receive a quick approval (within 3-6 months) while for others, the process can take years.

California state disability insurance only requires your doc to sign paperwork confirming the disability--he/she is the decision maker.

As far back as I can remember the general rule was that it took applying and appealing on average 3 times before most people would get approved (if they truly qualify of course).

Excuse me I mispoke I meant to say SDI not SSDI. However, SSI does take years, it has been that way as far back as I can recall. A very limited few with very severe disability would sometimes take a year or less, but than on average was never a common thing. I would assume that due to the economy that is probably still the case. With SDI the physician has to also certify that the disability is expected to last >1 yr.j
