You could fly into LAX and catch the bus (Flyaway bus) into Union Station. Then you could take the Amtrak train to Santa Barbara and rent a car in Santa Barbara. You'd skip most of the driving that way. Amtrak drops you off right near the beach and downtown in Santa Barbara.

405 - 5 - 126 - 150 is very scenic once you get as far as the 126. I actually opt for the 126 any time I can. The main traffic will be 405.

But as far as LAX is concerned, PCH (State Route 1) is the most civilized choice. From LAX, you can take Lincoln and just follow the signs for Higway 1 (Oxnard). In Oxnard, join U.S. 101 to State Route 33.

Approximately what time of day are you arriving? This could make a difference. If it's at night, just stay on the freeway (405/101). If on a weekend, the 126 option might be ok if you don't mind a few extra miles, but much of it scenic. Any other time, use PCH.

In that case, go to Oxnard or Ventura. If you go to Santa Barbara, you'll be backtracking quite a bit getting to Ojai. Rental car companies will pick you up at the train station if you ask them to. For that matter, there is an express shuttle that goes from LAX to Oxnard Airport and there are several rental car companies right there. Ventura County Airporter

Santa Barbara is a wonderful airport, but tends to be expensive. It's a small airport and doesn't handle large jets. Your best bet is still Burbank. If you're vacationing and want a scenic route over fast travel, I concur with the 5-126-150 route. Flying into Burbank avoids the disaster that is LAX, and 126 to 150 is simply a relaxing, beautiful drive. I don't think there's a better way to enter the Ojai Valley than to cruise down the switchbacks from the Upper Ojai to the Lower and pull off at the overlook for a view of the Topa Topas. Then, when you hit the flats, stop at Bocalli's for the best marinara sauce on the planet.

It can be expensive to fly into/out of Santa Barbara. Personally, I try to avoid LAX and use the BUR airport as much as economically feasible. If you elect LAX, depending on what time you arrive on Saturday, why don't you go to Ojai on the PCH/33 one way and 405/5/126/150 the other way? Whatever you do, avoid the 405 during rush hour!

Also, one poster mentioned that 126 was a twisty, two-lane road. The 150 certainly is, but the 126 is a four-lane, high-speed, (55 MPH limit, or is it 60?), road where they took the worst of the curves out when upgrading to four-lanes. Just be aware of the speed limit in Fillmore.
