I was born and raised in Oxnard and it tends to get a bad rap as if the whole city is a ghetto infested with gangs. Sure there are some bad areas with shady people, but that's how it is in a lot of cities everywhere. The city has grown a lot over the past 20 years and that's brought in a lot of nice residential neighborhoods and shopping areas. The nicer newer areas are on the west and north side of town. The major shopping areas are all on the north end as well. All in all the area is a pretty good place to live.

I operated two different businesses during my 17 yrs in Ventura. My customers came from all around the area...different ethnic backgrounds and also a couple of illegal Mexicans who admitted to being so after I spoke some Spanish to them relating my stay and experience in Mexico City. They relaxed a little and we conversed.

I grew up in Oxnard in the 50s early 60s. We lived on the North side on one of those streets that ends in "wood". It was a nice community then - but our activities were centered around the Catholic Church and it seemed all the people on our block were Catholic. I left Oxnard 30 years ago - at the time I left it was because the area was getting rough and I did not want to raise my children there. However, I understand Oxnard has cracked down on crime. They did have some lovely homes there, many with character near the Catholic Church area.

Single Life in Oxnard?
A friend of mine teaches at Malibu High School. He lives in Santa Monica, but it is too expensive and is looking elsewhere. He refuses to go to the Valley as it is all "families". What about Oxnard? How is it for Singles (not gay)?

Oxnard is not really a "single's" town. It's a young city with a lot of families. Your friend would be better off finding something affordable on LA's west side. Commuting from Oxnard to Santa Monica would get old very fast.
ETA: Oh, sorry, it would be Oxnard - Malibu commute. That's not too bad. Ventura might offer a tad more in the way of a single's scene, but not by much. Oxnard/Ventura is a laid back, slower paced (than LA) and somewhat outdoorsy area that attracts people for those aspect before any single's scene.
