I was born and raised in Oxnard and it tends to get a bad rap as if the whole city is a ghetto infested with gangs. Sure there are some bad areas with shady people, but that's how it is in a lot of cities everywhere. The city has grown a lot over the past 20 years and that's brought in a lot of nice residential neighborhoods and shopping areas. The nicer newer areas are on the west and north side of town. The major shopping areas are all on the north end as well. All in all the area is a pretty good place to live.

Coming from Seattle, Oxnard will be a culture shock.

Check this story out. All the cities in Ventura County including Oxnard are too safe to recieve any federal funds to add Police services. I started a thread about this in the Main California Forum

Police federal stimulus funds elude county : Local News : Ventura County Star

I operated two different businesses during my 17 yrs in Ventura. My customers came from all around the area...different ethnic backgrounds and also a couple of illegal Mexicans who admitted to being so after I spoke some Spanish to them relating my stay and experience in Mexico City. They relaxed a little and we conversed.

Like every other city there is the good and the bad. Thing is to find out from private citizens who may not have an agenda for the straight scoop on what would be a good place to rent/buy.

I like Ventura above the Methodist Hospital...and east end of town towards Santa Paula north of the 126 FWY. City expansion is limited going to the east. Besides your right at the beach so to speak without any night/morning fog or salt air.

Santa Barbara is to the north/west up the coast while Big LA is to the South.

As others have said...weather is nice...never too hot and never too cold.

It would be paradise compared to Seattle and it's weather.

Steve

Steve,

We have Ventura County Medical Center and Community Memorial Hospital (where I work.) both located on Loma Vista about 6 blocks apart. Where is the Methodist Hospital located?

OOOOPS meant community Memorial where I had more then one surgery. Do you remember or know Dr Bloom or Dr Rabkin...they were my Drs when I was in VTA. or Dr Maas Oral Surgeon who was an acquaintance of mine.

I grew up in Oxnard in the 50s early 60s. We lived on the North side on one of those streets that ends in "wood". It was a nice community then - but our activities were centered around the Catholic Church and it seemed all the people on our block were Catholic. I left Oxnard 30 years ago - at the time I left it was because the area was getting rough and I did not want to raise my children there. However, I understand Oxnard has cracked down on crime. They did have some lovely homes there, many with character near the Catholic Church area.

I would say Oxnard/Ventura/Camarillo is certainly worth a look and no doubt prices of homes have dropped and will probably continue to do so.

Default Single Life in Oxnard?

A friend of mine teaches at Malibu High School. He lives in Santa Monica, but it is too expensive and is looking elsewhere. He refuses to go to the Valley as it is all "families". What about Oxnard? How is it for Singles (not gay)?

Oxnard is not really a "single's" town. It's a young city with a lot of families. Your friend would be better off finding something affordable on LA's west side. Commuting from Oxnard to Santa Monica would get old very fast.

ETA: Oh, sorry, it would be Oxnard - Malibu commute. That's not too bad. Ventura might offer a tad more in the way of a single's scene, but not by much. Oxnard/Ventura is a laid back, slower paced (than LA) and somewhat outdoorsy area that attracts people for those aspect before any single's scene.

Heavens to betsy...the valley is all "families"...thats a shame.

The man teaches in a High School which consists of kids (teens).

They all come from "families".

Without all those "families" he would not have a job.

Lived/worked/owned business in Ventura...the place is full of "families" as is Oxnard.

The friend is probably Gay but not yet out in the Open...still needs a friend to seek a singles place to live that is not too expensive. Hells bells...Santa Monica is NOT expensive by any means. He wants cheap...how about south LA or East LA where the avg normal "families" people live. They live in residential homes and not in one bedroom Apts that most singles reside in.

All cities are the same and fill the various needs of the population.

Then again Malibu is NOT your normal city by any means...mostly affluent residents...and yes "families".
