you should look more into Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park. The apartments are more within the $1200 you mentioned. School is excellent and crime is almost unheard of. I grew up in Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village and live there for 18 years and still work there and my parents 's house is over there. I bought a house in North East Oxnard now and very happy with it. Oxnard is not too far from work for me, you get more home for the money in Oxnard. I will probably move back to Thousand Oaks Westlake when I have kids because I have always been impressed with the Conejo Valley School Unified District.

And.......

Zip Code 91361
  • Demographics
  • Total Population: 18,724
  • White Population: 16,942
  • Black Population: 149
  • Hispanic Population: 1,066

  • Female Population: 9,580

  • Median Age of Males: 43.3
  • Median Age of Females: 45.3
  • Geography
  • Region: West
  • Division: Pacific
  • State: California
  • CBSA Type: Metropolitan
  • CBSA Name: Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura CA
  • County: Ventura
  • City: Westlake Village
  • Longitude: -118.8
  • Latitude: 34.2
  • Elevation: 1,100 feet above sea level
  • Area code: 805
Zip Code 91361 is in both counties. The Postal Service has labeled zip 91361 as Westlake Village. (I live in the City of Huntsville, but the Postal Service has labeled my zip 35763 as Owens Crossroads, which is also a nearby city - but I don't live in Owens Crossroads. It's confusing. When I order something on Amazon for example and I enter "Huntsville" and "35763", I get a big red "Invalid City and Zip Code Combination" message because Amazon's database in indexed by zip codes and not city names.) Zip codes and city boundaries are unrelated.

Bottom line: If it is in Los Angeles County, then it is the City Westlake Village; If it is in Ventura County, then it is the City of Thousand Oaks. Locals, merchants, the census, and the post office can describe it or label it or call it anything they want but the city limits are as I described.

I'm a single parent of a little girl. I use to live in L.A and I don't want to go back. I was considering San Diego but recently people have been suggesting Ventura County. I looked at Craigslist and I was surprised at the good choice of apts for a little cheaper than L.A rent. This was very motivating to me.

Living in a Safe, Clean area with good schools is important, did I mention SAFE?? It doesn't have to be Malibu, but I want an area where I can live in a decent place while we put down some roots and build a new life.

Also I'm divorced, so I don't necessarily want to be in the middle of no where, I would like to eventually meet a single guy when the right time comes. So no Farm Country, or Dangerous Gang areas for me and my little one please.

Some good deals I have found on Craigslist (Ventura) are in these cities, can you tell me if these are good/bad areas?

Camarillo
Oxnard
Ventura
to name a few

Thanks!!!
Newbury Park is perfect!

Most of the places we've been suggesting are perfect except for the lack of dating opportunities. (Living in a family community makes a single feel "extra single".)

Still, the child comes first and the priorities should center on the kid. Mom can venture out to greener pastures on weekends.

As for Westlake Village, if we can't decide where it is, the place is still a very nice city to live in.

Charles comments on dating opportunities: Is it possible to find a companion in a family oriented community? Anyone had any luck with that? Maybe the thing is to live where you will be the most comfortable and join clubs for the dating scene. Not too sure that hitting the clubs will find you the best choices in a life long companion though. I have spent my time at the clubs and have had a lot of fun. My wife and I still love to head on over to The Bombay Bar and Grill over on California street in Ventura to go dancing and have some fun.

Living in Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Simi would put you in a family oriented city with the ability to head over to clubs, places to meet people near by or within a short drive. Another place that we like to visit is the Universal City Walk. They have some great clubs there if you are into dancing and having fun. I am no drinker but do love a good time.

p.s. If you chose to live in an apartment complex or condos your chances of meeting other single/divorced guys triples. Check out Craiglist for the areas that appeal to you and also The Acorn Newspaper that shows local rentals for Agoura, Oak Park, Westlake Village, T.O. area. Good luck and wish you the best.

I live in newbury park and it has the best schooling system around. Its got the most small town feeling out of all of the surrounding areas. Newbury Park is one of the few schools in the state to offer the International Baccalaurate program which I am graduating from, and it is the least materialistic. Also, we have tons of kids from oxnard and camarillo who are very displeased with the gang rates and the unsafeness of the area. plus newbury park is a mile away from the santa monica mountains.

I loved growing up here.

Its as far south as you can go while living in Ventura County.

Port Hueneme and parts of Oxnard have slightly lower latitudes.

I would say that South Oxnard and Port Hueneme are both further south than Newbury Park.
