To date I have had a very positive experience with my move to VT. However I have only been here about 3 weeks into it and have yet to finalize on a house. i am living out of a motel in Morrisville on the companies dime for a little bit.

I have been attending a community church since arriving here and have been invited out to supper several times by some very wonderful people who are all making me at home. The people I work with are also great.

Overall my experience has been wonderful.

Moving can be extremely difficult emotionally. I am so happy that you are having such a good experience.

For me, as a potential transplant, your experience is encouraging. Thank you for posting about it.

Would the motel be The World Famous Charlmont by any chance?

Also - please go check out The Forget-Me-Not shop in Johnson. You'll thank me - no kidding...

How you will be treated will depend on where you move. I'm generalizing here, but I would recommend being in or within ten miles of the bigger towns like Burlington or Brattleboro, and would not recommend being near the ski areas or in the Northeast Kingdom. Artsy communities like Williamsville and South Newfane (in the Town of Newfane) are also recommended.

If you list some places you're interested in, we could probably give you more help.
Just curious as to why you would recommend a newcomer avoiding the ski areas? There are so many transplants to those areas it would seem that it would be easier to fit it. I may be moving to Rutland (from NJ) and I don't anticipate too much trouble fitting in there. I have been a Killington "weekend warrior" for many years and I already know people in the area, so that helps. But I would think the smaller rural areas would be the toughest for outsiders.

The key here is to ASSIMILATE. Embrace the lifestyle that is here. Commune with the local people and they will accept you. If you're headed to Vermont to build a Mcmansion because the real estate is cheaper than where you came from, then there will be resentment. Figure out who YOU really are and what your motivation is. Hey, if you always wanted to have a farm and or rural lifestyle and could not afford it where you are, then come on up! You will find people who will be glad to lend a hand. Bring your work clothes, a sense of humor, and a little bit of humility and you will do just fine! The people of Vermont are really good people.

Outstanding response!!!! It is not hard to fit in, but for many it is rather hard to tone down their agendas. I am not advocating concealing your beliefs, interests, or lifestyle choices, but it generally a smart idea to arrive and slowly feel an area out before advertising yourself. People with vastly different characteristics can be good neighbors and up here more often than not are.

Aw, all of this makes me want to relocate

I come from an old St. Albans family but have never lived there full time. I love VT. I've always been impressed at how much pride there is in the state (especially growing up in NJ...)

Just moved to North Carolina, though. No jobs in VT for what I do. Gotta visit soon though.

When I lived briefly in White River Junction about 20 years ago, I was also impressed with the fierce pride Vermonters have in their state.

I had previously lived in Rhode Island. One winter, it was a mess. The TV anchor described the mess " and other signs of a typical Rhode Island winter". I was struck by the good-humored deprecation. It was funny and I still remember it about 20 years later.

One question: What kind of job can you do in North Carolina that you can't do in Vermont? Is it that no jobs are available for you in your chosen field, or is it that the job doesn't exist in Vermont (for example ocean beach life guard)? Or are you an entrepreneur driven away by Vermont's taxes and restrictive regulations?

Biotech - but if I can ever work it to where I freelance full time I'll spend at least part of the year in VT (I dunno about those winters - I just left Florida!)
