Default dealing with bug season!

Hello,

I enjoyed my first vermont winter, but was not expecting the bug season to be so severe. I could use any tips, tricks, or advice on how to cope during bug season. I am in Wardsboro, deep in the green mountains. I was wondering how long bug season lasts and was told the bugs come out from 60 - 90 degrees. Vitamin b-12 was mentioned.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Jonny

Remember that Domino's Super Bowl commercial. With the guy eating pizza with Tabasco sauce on it. The mosquito blew up. LOL Bug spray is really the best bet. Nets. bug lights. ect. Also Sodium Vapor Lights, and Yellow lamps/Light Bulbs will not attract them as badly as a normal Lamp will.

Also make sure you don't have any standing water hanging out in your yard, like old pools, tires, anything that can trap water and let the little buggers breed.

Hi Jonny,

Citronella candles and torches work a bit. I think using tea tree soap and shampoo helps too. Do you live in the woods that are mostly evergreen? That's where the bugs like to hang out.

This is going to sound crazy - but put up some bat houses. That will attract the bats to your property and they will help control the bug population.

Default Mosquito Magnet

Try a Mosquito Magnet. They work wonders. Will clear a 1 acre parcel in about 3 weeks. It interrupts the breeding cycle.

Thanks for all ur replies. I am building a cabin deep into my lot of 60 acres. and its pretty dense forest with a mix of all hardwoods. I am going to try the mosquito magnet. i really couldn't believe the amount of bugs that are out here. none of the deep woods off or sprays worked. sprays were just icing for theses guys.

Up my way the bugs have not been really too bad at all, but then the last two weeks have been very dry. If you have to be outside then DEET is the only sure fire way to keep the bugs from biting. I know there are more options being advertised and used, but I spend a large amount of time outside and for me DEET is what works against the most insects under a variety of conditions.
