Not trying to be flame bait here, just curious as I've never been to VT and would like to visit someday.

digdig -
I can't easily speak to your question about the "liberal vibe" without reiterating my posts above. And I'm not sure what a "hemp shop" is.
If you're actually curious, I can send you some links - but I cannot post them here. Contact me if you wish and I'll send you to some interesting sites.
I CAN tell you that Burlington Vermont has won awards for it's liveability, it's performing arts, it's natural resources, it's main street, it's downtown, it's attractiveness to families, to retired people, to women, and to students. It's won awards from such varied sources as Readers Digest, Outside Magazine, and The National Bus association, to name just 3 out of more than a dozen.
During the first mayoral term of Bernard Sanders, Burlington was chosen by The National Association of Mayors as The Best Small City for The Arts. This isn't surprising if you've ever seen, say, a free concert by the lake in
Burlington. But it's really surprising if you consider the fact that every one of the Mayors in question was a Republican or a Democrat ...except for Sanders.
The slavery question is as you state - an old one, and settled. But the issue of Civil rights is very much alive in Burlington. Regardless of your own viewpoint, you may want to search for the phrase "Vermont Secretary Of State Civil Unions". Look alsewhere onb the www, and you'll see many many points of view expressed about an issue many Vermonters consider a current civil rights issue. The Secretary of State's page on the State of Vermont's web site is a good place to start with this if you're interested.
Regards,
Chaz

There's a lot missing from it, and it's somewhat out of date, but I just had a look at the Burlington Vermont page at the huge encyclopedia site the name of which begins with "wik" and ends with "ia"
;-)

It was a very long time ago for YOU, but many familes who were directly affected by that are still alive today. There are relatives of slaves who are living in today's modern society and it fits in for them. I am just curious...what part of the country are you from?

Vermont's full of wonderful towns in my opinion. But Burlington's unique in the world.

Thanks Sevdie!
I couldn't agree more with your post # 13, but I can't seem to click your "rate this post positively" now. I seem to have used all my clicks...
I'm reading Taylor Branch's book Parting The Waters, so your post was particularly welcome right about now...

Aaaah yes. Parting the Waters is intense, but worth the read IMO. Thanks for the compliment!
