Watching out for Moose
I have read some horror stories about people getting in to accidents from hitting Moose while driving. Does this happen a lot? Is it a seasonal thing, or do Moose and Deer present a driving hazard all year long?

I couldn't tell you if it happens a lot, as I don't live in VT, but I would have to say that every time I go up there, I see at least one deer. I've had deer run in front of my car on Rt 100 several times, but luckily, each time they ran fast and I was driving slow enough that we avoided colliding. I believe they are more active during early morning and late afternoon, but I'm sure someone else can confirm that. I've seen moose as well...but not nearly as often.

I have just moved into the area from MI and though you do have to be careful, I have actually seen way more car deer accidents in MI than here. Moose though much larger and worse to hit are far more rare. That is not to say that you have to keep alert, but that is the same in most rural areas of America.

Like others have said you'll see far more deer than moose. I saw a very young moose just a few weeks ago, and we both stopped short, looked each other in the eye, and went on about our travels.
But it pays to be alert on the road for many reasons and crossing animals is just one of them.

Moose vs. car does happen here in VT, but not very often. A couple times a year I'd say. Deer are definately more prevelant.

I know the area around Lake Elmore is bad for moose but Vermont is nothing like Maine. I do remember last year a story in the news about some guy somewhere up in the NEK and he hit a moose in the morning, he was ok but not the car and unfortunately the moose. Later that day he borrowed his mother's car and unbelievably he hit another moose. Talk about bad karma!

Up in the White Mountains of NH, they have large signs everywhere warning about car collisions with moose...and actually, last month, while driving down 100 (just south of Warren, if I remember actually!) there were hand made signs warning for moose. We figured that if they were hand made, that we should take it pretty seriously.

I assume your talking about Rt 100, Warren, Vermont. That's Granville Gulf, notorious for moose on/near the road. About 5 miles from me.

Yup, sorry, should have specified Warren VT! It was a beautiful ride - I love the Mad River Valley. :-)

In the last month four people were injured on I89 in Moretown hitting a moose and also one driver was killed in another moose collision on I89 south of Montpelier. Yes, the moose are here and they are slow moving and very hard to see at night. Last Saturday I saw two good sized moose cutting across my land. It just amazes me to see drivers at night on the highway flying along 70 to 80 mph. Once we start getiing a weekly body count folks may start to take notice.
