We will see. You and Chaz Lounge have both been so helpful. I will definitely let you both know where I end up living. Burlington VT is on my list of NE spots to visit this fall along with a few others.

GypsySoul,

I just went to the links you PM to me. The only thing that concerns me is that Burlington's crime rate is abouve the national average. Everything else seems GREAT though.

Don't worry about the crime rate...it's not dangerous here! Lots of robberies of gas stations etc. for drug money (I would assume). We only have a handful of murders in every year (what are we up to this year...4?) - for the whole state. 99.9% are domestic cases or drugs.

Can you or GypsySoul tell me the source for the crime statistic?
I'm puzzled...

I really don't have specific links for Burlington. I use a variety of links to find info for where I want to go and sent those to Sevdie.

I would agree crime is probably pretty low in Burlington compared to many places in the USA.

Sperlings seems to have a strange twist on crime (they rated Burlington a '7' (1 being the lowest) on property crime..

I would think the best thing to do is talk to people HERE who live in the area to get a truer picture.

Thanks GypsySoul. If you'd share your links with me, I'd be most grateful.

Here's a link to a site which uses FBI uniform crime stats. Those stats are from the year 2000

Scrolling down brings you to a paragraph with ranking information.
The first sentence in that paragraph is "In the year 2000 Vermont had an estimated population of 608,827 which ranked the state as having the 49th in population. For that year the State of Vermont had a total Crime Index of 2,986.9 reported incidents per 100,000 people. This ranked the state as having the 44th highest total Crime Index."

I suspect the data are from 2000 because of the census.

It makes me unhappy when somebody thinks Burlington's crime rate is above the national average, because it's contrary to my understanding.

Thanks

I went to Sperling's "best places" link. It lists the crime rate on a scale of 1-10 (1 being lowest and 10 being highest). According to this site, the National average is 3 (???). and it listed Burlington as 7 on the scale. I also went to "Find Your Spot" .com and its profile described Burlington's crime rate as being above the national average. I am still coming this fall to check it out because that is literally the ONLY THING I've heard about Burlington that concerned me.

I didn't mean to offend you. I like to check several sources when it comes to places I've never been before and the websites seem to paint different pictures of the cities. I am glad I found this forum because I get to find out from real people who actually live in the area rather than a bunch of numbers. It suprised me when I read that about the crime rate, but my resources are pretty limited. Sorry if I offended you.

Sevdie - I'm not offended at all! I'm poring over the sperling and find your spot sites to see if they reveal the source of thier opinions.
