If your coming from I87(Northway) once you get over Vt border much faster to head up to Burlington on Rt 30 rather than Rt 7. Taking Rt 7 your driving east when you can be driving north on Rt 30 plus you avoid going thru RutVegas.

I know this is an old post but I am still curious about the best route from NC to VT. I will be traveling from Burlington, VT to Winston-Salem, NC (very close to Greensboro, NC). I truly enjoy scenic routes and back roads, but I definitely do NOT want to take the longest route home. I plan on doing the trip in two days. Probably 9-10 hours the first day and the rest of the drive the following day.

Google Maps recommends (as the quickest route) taking US-7S to 84 (via 22A-S, US-4W, and NY-149W) to 78 then 81. The other option recommended by Google is to take 88W to Bimghamton then 81S.

Just from looking at the map, it seems that 89 to 91 to either 95 or 87 (via 84) would be an option, but its not listed on Google. It does look like it could get confusing around NYC.

It seems like there is no easy way to go. What is the latest recommendation? Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks!

I don't know that 89 to 91 would be any more scenic than the routes suggested by Google. Any route that takes you completely outside the NYC area is probably the best route, especially if you want to make decent time. There's almost always traffic around NYC, unless you go through there later at night or early in the morning (or in the middle of the night).

Thanks Jim. I agree that avoiding NYC is probably a good idea.
