It is funny that you mention the chief quit and that put applicants on the back burner. Several Vt towns go through this almost annually. Before committing to hire on here as a LEO I would very closely follow up on the VT police standards and training council rules which also cover rules for lateral hires. I did and was not impressed and as mentioned before a fairly high number of LEOs here are not happy. Beware before you leap. It is exactly this reason why I chose to spend more to live in Chittenden County so as to have greater employment options. Taking a job in an outside area and then finding out it will not work out can be emotionally and financially devastating. Another interesting fact that was brought to my attention recently is that many departments in Vt have a tendancy to dismiss more tenured officers for alleged policy violations and those wo have the financial resources have often fought wrongful terminations and even won reinstatement. I can assure you after going through such a process and then trying to resume work in a hostile environment would not be pleasant.

Ouch. Thanks, Flu, for your insight. Maybe we should look into Wisconsin or Oregon... some other progressive states that have some nice, small towns and the beauty of 4 seasons. I appreciate the information! In the meantime, he applied for a sergeant's position in Springfield and is waiting to hear back. The last he heard, they had someone local who seemed to fit the bill and would save them the money of sending my husband to the academy to meet certification requirements. Oh well. Most likely, we will suck it up here in AZ until he retires. Until then, we will visit my dad in Mass. and take day trips to VT, driving through the towns with longing in our eyes.

Don't rule out Vermont as a possible future home, but the most pragmatic choice is to wrap up a career to ensure you get the most benefits. Don't be blindsided by "progressive" hype when it comes to locations. People are people everywhere and unfortunately they will take advantage of you anywhere. I have lived everywhere from NYC to Alaska and now here in Vt and to be brutally honest I have found that many of the progressive tolerance preaching folks are actually neither. Good luck with your future plans and if your travels take you here may you find the right setting. Just do your homework and ask questions and scrutinze the answers. One good thing about having worked as a LEO (and growing up in NYC didn't hurt either) it is pretty easy to know when people are feeding you hype.
