Rutland (town)
Any info on Rutland? I understand I need to clarify town, not city. We may look at the area in the next year; how are schools, housing, medical, etc?

Schools - don't know. Rutland town has it's own elementary school. Not sure about middle school, but the high school kids go to Rutand High which is shared with Rutland City.
The hospital in Rutland has a good reputation as far as I can tell.
Hopefully someone with a more intimate knowledge of Rutland can get back to you.

I don't know, I grew up 30 miles from Rutland and my wife was born and raised there. It has a bad rap but I don't think it deserves it. The economy is slightly depressed but things seem to be going better as of late.
There is a shopping center just as your heading up Rt 4 towards Killington which sat vacant for quite o few years. Home Depot wanted to buy it fix it up, people fought it for a few years but now that it's built it certainly alot looks better than it did.
Walmart wanted to come into Rutland and they forced them to put the store right downtown and I believe it's the only Walmart in a downtown location. There is a nice small mall on the south end of town that always seems to be in financial straits.
Rutland has a nice collection of artists in the area, the Chaffee Center for the Arts is a wonderful resource.
There are some nice rural type areas in Rutland Township, north and south of the city.
There is also a pretty cool skiing community in Rutland with Killington just up the road and the city is at the foot of one of the largest mountains in Vermont. There is also a Vermont state college in Castleton about 15 minutes away. My brother graduated from there.

The local hospital has a bad rep. I'm not sure whether it's deserved or not.
Music is free somewhere almost every day through the summer. Killington music festival is classical.

I've heard that from others. In the last year, we've had to use the hospital four times. (Chris had a rough year! He's fine now, though.) In each case, the staff and the medical care Chris received were exemplary. What could have been a horrible experience was merely frightening and soon resolved because RRMC handled things and treated him so well. That said, we'd rather not need their services at all!
