Default Retired,relocating back to Vermont

My wife and i moved from Vermont in 1978 to Texas for employment. I am now retired and my wife has a year untill she can retire. We have always missed our home state and want to return. Can any of the retires on this forum chime in with info and experiences that may be helpfull. We lived in the central part of the state before moving and would like to return to that area.Thanks....

Not much in your question to go on. Are you looking for a retirement community, be in town, out of town, a home with property that you have to maintain. It sounds like your both getting a pension from your jobs?

A good friend just retired to Florida he just was looking for a home they liked, could afford and be able to pay with their income for the lifestyle they wanted.

I guess i was a bit vague, what i am wondering is how affordable is housing, looking for residential in central VT. 150 to 200k. How about health care, living in Austin we have the best in the country and only a few short minutes from our door step. I don't expect that in rural VT.,i know there are tradeoffs. Also looking for any tips one may have to offer on a ruturn to VT.My wife are both in our early 60s and want to enjoy hiking, biking and most any outdoor activity. Thanks...

When you say residential I guess your talking about a single family home which in the price range you posted would be very hard to find but they do exist. Especially right now. A small condo would be more in your price range. Depending on the town a small house with say an acre could have high property taxes. $1500 -$2500/yr.
This website is a great place to start checking out what's out there. It covers just northern NE, push the contol button and you can select up to 15 diferent towns at once.

There are a couple realtors who post in here, maybe they will chime in with some advice.

Healthcare is abit complicated but if I ended up in an ambulance I would ask them to take me to Gifford Hospital, small hospital in Randolph rather than the big hospital in Montpelier/Berlin. Both are about the same distance from me. I would google it and there should be plenty of info to help you with that.

Regarding outdoor activities there are the same great activities in Vermont as when you left. Actually I think it has improved with the Catamount Trail and many towns in Vermont putting in community pathways for biking, walking and hiking.

Unfortunately, we've had to put our regional healthcare systems to the test. In 2008 my husband became gravely ill and didn't recover for over a year. He's doing very well now thanks to the excellent medical care he's gotten, which I feel compares well with the best care found anywhere in the country.

We live in Rutland.
We've had a fantastic PCP for years. Though there are many doctors in Rutland, we drive 25 minutes to our primary care doc's office and it's so worth the trip. He and the nurses and office staff have been as good as we could hope for.

The local hospital, Rutland Regional Medical Center, has been great for less complicated needs, such as my husband's surgery for kidney stones and hernia repairs. For his serious health condition, we utilize a specialty department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center over an hour away. There are also specialists at Fletcher Allen in Burlington. If something is truly unusual and needs a team not found at either place, we could drive 3 hours to Boston.

Have you been in VT since you moved away? If not you may be shocked at how different the state is...

The most likely area for finding something nice in that price range is in the NEK. It might be possible in parts of central VT (Rutland for instance) but you may not like those areas...

Hi, are you looking for additional activities such as skiing [including cross-country]? hiking? canoe/kayaking? Etc. There are still some terrific values for properties in south-central Vermont, i.e., Chester/Cavendish [one of the advantages, I think, of Cavendish you are close enough to Okemo w/out paying "Ludlow/Okemo" taxes [smile]....Mount Holly has some good options too....Weathersfield/Reading which will get you to Woodstock and the Upper Valley easier.....a few additional thoughts for you.

Canaan/Beacher Falls is close to a hospital in the NEK and you could probably find a house with a decent bit of land for that price up there. The groceries are no bargain there and its a small town area but if you just want to hike and bike it might fit the bill for you. I was a little surprised how high some of the real estate was up there, but with the furniture factory closing down there should be a lot of properties on the market. I kind of think some people are dreaming what they can get for their basic house there. I'm sure the town appraises their homes for that much, but the town appraisals are always lies that never reflected reality.
