Hey everyone,

I wanted to ask a few questions. I am finishing up medical school in Ohio and have always wanted to move to VT.

Does anyone have a good recommedation of what city and area of Vermont would be a great spot to live in terms of both healthcare system and raising a family?

I figure the larger cities offer more working potential, but are their any smaller towns that exemplify the essence of a storybook neighborhood atmosphere?

Any input and experiences would be great, thanks.

Money? Shelburne. Storybook? Craftsbury Corners.

A mix? Maybe Arlington. It'll change from time to time.

My vote goes for Shelburne. You'd be 15-20 minutes from Fletcher Allen and it's a great place to raise a family. You could also find some great family neighborhoods in South Burlington (even closer to FAHC) but it's definitely more sprawling than Shelburne.
Alternatively, Montpelier is ultra-cool and very family-friendly and you'd be really close to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Manchester Center, VT is looking for doctors. Beautiful surrounding in southern VT with quick access to ski resorts, fly fishing, hiking and biking trails. Many outstanding restaurants, best book store in the northeast, outlet shopping. Excellent schools and high school students have the option to attend Burr and Burton Academy for free. Only 1+ hour from Albany, NY.

Before I responded, I should have asked, what kind of a doctor? And do you want to be affiliated with a hospital?

VermontLori has a very good point. What type of physician are you? Not every area will have the patient population for every type of doctor. Do you want a private practice or do you want to work for a medical center? If you are interested in private practice, contact a private practice or family practice physician to find out about reimbursement, amount of time dealing with insurance as compared to patients, etc. These are the same issues every place will have. Many of these issues can be unique to Vermont. There are pluses and minuses with both.

If you're a primary care doctor, southern VT and upstate NY would love to have you.

Vermont is hurting for PCPs. You'd be welcome anywhere.

However, even specialists are in demand. My neighbor is a surgeon and moved here from Kentuckey to take a position with one of the smaller hospitals. He loves his work and makes a really great income (they give doctors good incentives to work in rural areas).

I'd just decide where I wanted to live and work from there.

Norwich, Vermont is right across the river from Hanover NH-home of Dartmouth U and it's hospital. It's a charming little town. Expensive.

Woodstock is the town called a "typical" vermont small town dripping with character. We Vermonters know it's anything but typical, but it might be what you have in your head.

Dorset Vermont is stunningly beautiful farm and horse country. You pretty much need to be a doctor to live there, so you'd be set. Storybook. It's near Manchester.

If you find yourself near Burlington you might want to look at Shelburne and Charlotte, although neither has much of a town center. Gorgeous rural properties.
