We will be moving our family to Bristol and would love any info on the town. We have small children and will be working in Burlington. Any thoughts on the town or commute? Much appreciated'

I love Bristol. Nice small town with lots of young families.
Schools - Bristol Elem School and Mt. Abe High School (middle & high) don't have the greatest reputations. Things are changing though...like I said...lots of educated young families moving into town.
Restaurants - YUM. Quite a few good ones. Bobcat Cafe is my favorite-great food and beer. It's kid friendly. Snaps is also good for comfort type foods. Rockydale has good pizza as does Cubbers. The Bristol Bakery is a nice spot for a pastry, sandwich, and a cup of coffee.
Shopping - some nice small shops in town. There is a Shaws for groceries and Mountain Green Market for natural and organic foods. There is a Farmer's Market on Saturdays during the summer.
Kid stuff-there are a couple playgroups in the area that I am familiar with. You can contact the Addison County Parent/Child Center for more information. I believe the Center is in Middlebury. You can also check Meetup.com to see if there are any groups in the area that would interest you.
Outdoor activities - tons. Skiing nearby at Mad River, Sugarbush, or the Middlebury Snow Bowl. Hiking-lots nearby including Deer Leap which you access right in town.
Commute - into downtown Burlington? You're looking at 45-50 minutes in good weather. If you are going to Williston or South Burlington the commute will be 10 or so minutes shorter.
Any other questions?

Whether the commute is worth it is up to you obviously. If you end up not liking Bristol as much as you thought you could always move closer to Burlington.
Yes to local farms. You'll meet the farmers this summer at the Farmers Market or you could ask at Mountain Greens and they could point you in the right direction. There is a large local turkey/chicken farm called Misty Knoll in New Haven and you can find their meat across the area in stores.
You can also check out a local CSA. Some do winter shares. Middlebury has a winter farmer's market that you can check out as well.

The town is great, but the commute may or may not be an issue. It depends on a few factors. What route you drive, if it will be during commuting hours and the weather. The drive with no traffic and good weather is about 45-50 min. 116 can take a bit longer to drive on. I have a friend from work who lives in Huntington just off of 116 (north of Bristol) and his average commute is about 45-50 min. to FAHC. The issue with Rt 7 is that it is the only main route on the western side of the state and it is heavily traveled with few passing lanes. Bad weather and commute times will add to the travel time on Rt 7. It also depends on the location in Burlington you will be working. For example, if you work on Williston Rd, the traffic is heavier during the commute times and it could add ten to fifteen minutes more to the commute.

The town of Bristol is very nice and it is easy to understand why you like it. If you are worried about the commute or access to local food, you can live almost anywhere and get access to great local food. There are many, many links and different options. This is one for Chittenden County. http://www.vermontgrowersguide.com/u...tenden-Web.pdf Many view Burlington as a typical city, but within a couple of minutes of the downtown there are hundreds of acres of farmland such as the Intervale and many of the other farms listed and not listed in the link. I noticed you may be a nurse. If you will be working at FAHC or one of our off site locations. There are food share plans as well as all sorts of local produce sold at a discount and they also deliver to the hospital so you don't need to drive somewhere to pick up.

The Bakery is great. Make sure you make the jaunt over to the Bobcat Cafe for dinner sometime!

By all means, go to the Bobcat cafe. One of the most memorable meals in awhile. bristol is a wonderful small town, but I personally would not like the commute in the winter.

Bristol is one of the towns I would love to move to in VT (if I ever end up being able to move up there... stupid house decreasing in value down here). It feels like a CO mountain town and the view down Main St reminds me of the view down Main St in Telluride with the mountains in back.

Someday.......
