Seems strange that the 'grestest nation on earth' puts healthcare of its citizenry at the mercy of for profit companies- says something about the real priorities of the USA- Affordable healthcare is a moral and dcesnt goal. If you are 50 and over and loose your job and today your pension- can you really afford $400 a month for healthcare?

I'm in my mid-thirties, married, with kids, and health care is the last obstacle we must cross before making our move.

I'm all for a National Health Care system. Call it "socialized medicine," I don't care. We need to get the health care needs of our citizenry out of the hands of corporations whose primary goal is profit.

Mark S.

Sorry I can't provide a specific reference here, but there's a story in the "local" papers lately about somebody (an academic? a think tanker?) who recently completed a study for the State Legislature in Montpelier. He says essentially that it would be possible for VT itself to design a system which would cover everybody - with currently available funds.

And I believe it's already the case that there are almost no children without health coverage in the State Of Vt. Our former governor (previously an MD) Howard Dean made this a priority.

You may want to search on the term "Dr Dinosaur" and also see the State Of Vt www page...

Bernie's not the only VT politician working on this I'm happy to say.

Agreed. We've even considered Canada for a long time because we're so desperate for National Health Care System.

Here in Georgia we have a National style Health Care System.
If your an illegal alien, we now have in excess of 800,000 and that is conservative in number, you walk in the doctor or hospital and all of your care is free! Thanks to the Department of Health and Human Services paid for by you and I.
Ever wonder why your health care is so expensive, it isn't just the big companies.

My only concern with a National Health Care System is, can anyone name anything the government ever ran that worked???? Look at public education and your DMV. Now that's scary.

U.S. Army

U.S. Marines

U.S. Navy

U.S. Air Force

U.S. Coast Guard

Your state, county, and local police and fire departments

Federal Marshals

The interstate freeways we drive on

Our national parks

CIA

FBI

Not to say that any and all of those couldn't be improved. I'm sure they could. But the point of all of them is that they are a public service, not a for-profit company. Their mission is to serve the public, not make money.

We need to get our health care system out of the hands of corporations whose primary goal is the acquisition of greater and greater wealth.

That is a good list, but the list is not a group of Social Programs, it is National Defense. National Healthcare would be under the Social weave.

Let's now look at Government handling of "Social Domestic Programs"

Social Security
Medicaid
Medicare
FEMA
INS
HHS
FCC
FDA
and so on.

The issue here is not more government. The main issue on health care is tort reform.
Yes, we have major issues today with modern corporations since most are in the leadership hands of the dreaded Baby Boomer Me Generation.
But when you look at beaucracy's running the show it will spell even more doom. Could be the main reason most of the world looks to us for cures and care. Don't see many Americans hopping on planes to seek care elsewhere unless it involves drugs being available in France or Canada that are not here, of course due to the Government ran FDA not corporations.

One the defense front, (I'm prior Military) the reason you have items there in government that work is due to stong instilled discipline and a no excuse accountable network. Try doing that on the Federal Union controlled social service factor of Government.

Anyone have info on Arlington, VT?
Work? (legal field)
Pay scale? (I'm in FL w/NY salary) Where does Vermont fall on that scale?
Weather? (I know they have seasons) but I mean temperature wise?
I'm in FL and ready to head back north. It's just hard when your unfamiliar with certain towns. A little feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

Arlington is two towns North of Bennington, in Southern VT, on the western border of the State.

Arlington is only 3 towns from the Massachusets border, and may be a longer drive from Burlington than Montreal is...

Weather and pay / cost of living has been addresses fairly extensively at the other VT threads here.
