Last year there was talk of a Dunkin Donuts opening in one of the shopping strips in Stowe...the amount of backlash was unbelievable. The proposal was shelved; they instead opened it in a gas station on Route 100 - still in Stowe mind you, but apparently this is not as important a location, lol.
There used to be a McDonalds in Stowe also...it opened when I was a kid, but it had to be built to fit in with the architecture of the area...so no big golden arches. It had a small sign. It lasted a lot longer than I thought it would, in all honesty. It closed several years ago, but I don't know the reason why.

Typical Vermont gatekeeping. And people wonder why business doesn't like the state.

Intersection of 2 & 100? That is already a commercial area and is basically Waterbury. Snowfire, Juniper's Fare, a hardware store are already there. Family Dollar is not a large store. No big deal IMO. An affordable shopping option for many people. I doubt traffic would increase too much. That is already a fairly busy area.

Bingo...the intersection of Rt 100/2 is shared by Moretown, Waterbury and Duxbury depending on which corner your at. Any town that thinks they will be impacted will apply for party status.
A couple of years ago Home Depot wanted to renovate and put in store where another store went out of business, with a huge parking lot, on the Barre-Montpelier RD. When the city of Barre applied for party status, the city is about 5 miles away, I think Home Depot decided to avoid the hassle and cancelled the project. The building still stands vacant today.
Regarding Montpelier, it has had several national food chains like Dunkin Donuts and Subway. It made national news when Montpelier kept a McDonalds out of a downtown historic building about 15 years ago. Only state capital without a McDonalds...personally I couldn't care less. There are several hamburger chains a few miles from Montpelier on the Barre-Monpelier Rd.
About the same time Walmart wanted to put in stores at 3 locations in the Upper Valley and people fought it. Walmart just ended up putting the stores across the Ct River in NH. Wave goodby to 100m in loss sales tax revenue as many Vermonters shop there.
