Colchester - relocating - info needed
Hi,
My husband and I are looking to relocate to Vermont in the next 3 to 6 months. As near as possible of I-89, but within a maximum distance of 15-20 miles North of Burlington.. (I will be working in Montreal, while my husband will be working in Burlington).
We were told that Colchester would be a nice option for us. Which sections of Colchester are interesting, any new construction development. We are looking for a "young professional" sector, we are in our early 30's and plan to have eventualy one or two kids.
Also any suggestions of other towns (fitting our criterias) would be more than welcomed.
Thanks,

Colchester is suburban, with a fair amount of new construction. Commute to Montreal will be around 1.5 hours. If you'd like a more rural location, try Georgia, which is a little further north. Better yet, St. Albans (about 25 miles to Burlington - a little out of your specified range). 1/2 hour to Burlington, about an hour to Montreal. There is some new construction in St. Albans.

vter's right as usual.
Colchester, Georgia and St Albans (in that order) are all on the way to Montreal from Burlington. They each have at least one Interstate 89 exit serving them. They each have new construction and the sort of neighborhhods I'm picturing when you describe what you're looking for.
I can't post a link to MLS data here, but I'd be happy to email you info if you like.
You may even want to consider The Champlain Islands. That's the way I myself drive to Montreal from Burlington. That trip takes me an hour and 45 minutes, btw... Those Champlain Islands towns are South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, and Alberg. "The Islands" are served by a causeway - which connects you to the towns of Colchester, Essex (and Milton) - and allow you to get right on Interstate 89 in Northern Colchester.
Best of luck,
David Beckett, CBR

All the towns listed are good choices, but if you are set on Colchester look in the Malletts bay area. This is where I live right now and it is one of the best areas in Colchester.

Thank you all,
After looking at a map and talking to different people, I am quite set on Colechester. Is Malletts Bay much more expensive, are the houses for sale rare to find in the area, how about school system.
I also heard that when yu have water access, taxes are much higher... how about high speed internet, and generally living in the area (Colchester).?
Thanks

Homes around the bay are more expensive, but you can always find homes within a mile or two of the bay for less money than the 600,000 to 1 million plus dollar homes on the bay. I always look at the paper to see what homes are selling for and right now you could expect to pay between 250,000 to 350,000 for a good modest home in Colchester. If you want somthing bigger with more land then you will pay much more. If you are willing to live in a fixer upper you can get a home for closer to 200-240. Prices are coming down a little now, if you are willing to wait you may find better prices. The school system is good. It's not the best in the county, it has it's problems, but we keep on top of our children so many of the issues haven't effected us. General life in the area is very nice. The bay is five minutes fro I-89. It's a suburban area of town so it doesn't differ to much from any other suburb in the country that I have ever lived. There is plenty of outdoor recreation. There are sailboat races on the bay on thursday nights during the summer as well as ice fishing when the bay freezes thick enough. You don't have many options for high speed internet. You can choose between cable or satallite. Both are very expensive compared to other states.

Hi~
I live in Mallets Bay and love it here though there is a possibility that we may be relocating to upstate NY for a job for my husband.
I agree with everything that 68vette said- our daughter is going into 2nd grade at Porters Point School and couldn't be happier about her education. The recreation dept is fantastic as well and offers many programs.
We have DSL through Verizon and it's $29.99 per month. Our cell phone (Unicel) comes in all over town as well.
If you have any questions please PM me. I don't always remember to check back at threads.
Julie
Overall, this is a great town filled with wonderful people. It's so much fun to live by the lake.
