Woodstock, VT - Opinions
I had the pleasure of visiting Woodstock yesterday to meet a great friend who is considering the area and wanted to check it out as a potential living/working town.
What do folks, regular non-flatlanders, think of this town. I rated it with no reservations at the town center as "up-scale." Now is it too upscale, or just a beautiful New England village of less than 3,000. I understood that one of the problemss Woodstock suffers as so many beautiful places is a plethora of summer renter/owners.
Any thoughts appreciated.

I grew up in Vermont and we always (and I still do) a tourist town. The majority of its economy is geared toward visitors. There are lots of folks from "away" who have moved there or have second homes there, though there still are plenty of "natives" left in the area. Sure, it's really pretty, but IMO, its not a "real" Vermont town. Obviously I havent spent a whole heck of a lot of time there, so take my opinion as someone from the outside looking in. I'm not sure if there are any regulars who post here that live in or near Woodstock, but if there are, I'd love to hear a different "side of the story".

I drove through Woodstock for the first time this past weekend...it's a really beautiful town, postcard like, but yeah, LOTS of tourists. The whole area was crawling with them...I guess if you are not going to spend a lot of time 'in town', it's not such a big deal...the whole area was really pretty...

I view Woodstock as a "Stepford" town.....
To me it is the town a novelist tries to describe in
a story that revolves around a 'quant New England Town'.
Is it 'real' Vermont ? That could be argued. But, Rutland
is 'real' Vermont. Where would you rather spend your time ?
I think the crush of people invading 'your' space every weekend
and holiday might become unnerving eventually, though.

Thanks to all for your responses--none of which surprise. I am hoping my friend will read the thread and ask some specific questions--it is her potential gig. 
I think the town might be just a wee bit more perfect than I would be comfortable with, but I did meet some great folks walking around town, and had some great lunch at the Woodstock Farmer's Market.  |

Thats how I judge most towns, ontheroad....
I love walking and ogling at architecture at night
or early in the morning. Woodstock gives plenty
of ogle material so for that reason alone I give it
a two thumbs up ! |
