I've been out of VT since high school but my wife and I are considering moving back to be closer to family.

I work in as a software engineer, primarily w/ Java and web technologies. Does anyone have experience working in a similar position in the Burlington area? We're coming from DC, where the tech job market is booming, so I'm expecting a bit of employment "shock".

It looks like one major employer would be GE - I assume they bought the former IDX plant? Also I know IBM is in Essex but they never seem to have much in the way of software positions.

Yup...GE Healthcare bought out IDX. I know many, many people who work there. They pay well in order to keep the talent here (rather than having them lured away to more urban areas due to pay). The folks I know are very happy there.
There are also quite a few small firms around, but jobs in those places don't happen too often.
Qmonda (or something along those lines) in Williston (soon moving to S. Burlington) is apparently going to be hiring 30 or so engineers fairly soon according to an article I read recently.
Also try UVM and the State.
Good luck!!
