Default We're visiting soon! Any suggestions?

Finally, we have plans to visit Vermont, the Springfield area. Any suggestions on places to visit or even more important.....places to eat! My husband has a job interview and we thought we would take the time to scout out the areas near the state line and into New "Hampster", as our son calls it
Thanks!

Visit Brattleboro, the major town in southeastern Vermont. Try to be there on the first Friday of the month, when they have Gallery Walk. Fun fun fun!!! Lots of galleries and other arts venues are open to the public for free. The locals and people from all over come out to enjoy themselves. The town makes a big deal of it and makes lots of preparations.

I don't really know how Gallery Walk started, but it has really caught on and has become a staple of the Brattleboro calendar.

Places to eat? Check out the Brattleboro Food Co-op. You can buy prepared food there, but if you eat it at the tables, you have to pay a 10% restaurant tax. Also, there are lots of nice restaurants in Brattleboro. I have eaten at Thai Garden. It's good, but portions are small. I have eaten at one of the Chinese restaurants up on Putney Road, and it was great. There are all sorts of restaurants in Brattleboro, American and ethnic, from casual to fine dining.

There are some locally famous places, such as the Putney Diner. It is in Putney, not in Brattleboro. There is also a famous diner in Brattleboro, but I don't remember the name. I have never eaten in either place. But from what I have experienced, read and heard, food in Vermont is very good.

Look at Seven Nights Vermont at 7dSpot

The local free newspaper, Seven Days, started Seven Nights as a Vermont food review site.

If you are going to Springfield you should check out Chester, the neighboring town to the west. The drive on route 11 from Springfield is very nice. Chester is much more “Vermont” than Springfield which is kind of a generic old mill town. The main street of town has a lot of old stone buildings, cafes, & restaurants. There is also a train that you can ride. The kid(s) would like that.

Grafton is also a nice little town. Might be a nice drive from Springfield.

There is a Vermont Country Store in Rockingham, also very close to Springfield.

Just across the bridge in Charlestown, NH is a recreation of a colonial fort.

Most of the other replies have been interesting but not really about the Springfield area.
