Yes, she is. She is double majoring in Mandarin and Linguistics, and she is spending next year at Chengdu University in the Sichuan Province. She only has one year of Mandarin under her belt, so she's taking the eight-week intensive Mandarin program at Middlebury so she's better prepared for where she's going in September.

I decided to go with the Marriott Courtyard. Was just trying to be budget-conscious, but it's not much more than the independent properties, and it's less expensive than the area's B&Bs, which I wouldn't have enough leisure time to appreciate this trip anyway.

Thank you. I did see the Holiday Inn in Rutland listed, but I will be doing enough driving just to get up there, and only have one day to look around Middlebury, so I decided it's worth it to stay right in town. I'll keep that in mind for the future. I would like to visit Vermont for a longer stay in the future.

Amazing coincidence...I am looking at the Chinese MA program at Middlebury but want to visit first and talk to students there before I decide.

Good idea. She talked to students at her regular college who had attended Middlebury's program in the past.

I may be DMing you in a minute. Right now I'm having some difficulty arranging the August visit to the Chinese School, the admins not being too helpful in terms of arranging my visit, so I really could use your advice after you come back from Middlebury.

I stayed at the Swift House Inn last summer and loved it. It wasn't overly expensive, the room was comfortable, and it came with a good breakfast each morning. It was also a short walk to downtown Middlebury.

We stayed at the Middlebury Inn last fall. Very nice, and a great breakfast. Good lunch and dinner, too, if you want to eat at the hotel restaurant. Would definitely go there again.

Back from my trip to Middlebury. The Marriott Courtyard was very nice. It has an indoor pool, which was great because I like to swim. Relaxing after the six-hour drive.

Very picturesque town. I'd recommend Jackson's on the River for a restaurant--the hotel desk person mentioned it as a choice for my daughter, who is gluten intolerant. Jackson's indicates their GF (and vegetarian) choices right on their regular menu.

Vermont overall, or at least the part of it that I saw, is naturally beautiful. I didn't see how it would be much different from New York State right next door, but it is somehow. Maybe it's the light. We couldn't quite put our finger on it, but it looks different.

My daughter and I got the giggles after our first few encounters with restaurant servers, hotel staff, shop personnel, etc.--EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM with these happy, smiley faces and so friendly and polite--and apparently genuine, not a put-on for the idiotic out-of-staters. We knew we weren't in Jersey/the NY metro area anymore! It was a nice experience.

Wow, thanks for the review....I made reservations at the Middlebury Inn for August and then maybe come back here to do my review. I can hardly imagine what Vermont is like, having been in Texas and China for decades.
