Jericho
Hi everyone...can anyone tell me about Jericho? From what I can tell it seems like it's becoming a bedroom community for Burlington, but I was curious about the town itself. Does it have it's own schools? Do you have to go to Essex for all your food shopping, etc? Is there a town center?
We did a drive near there a while ago but didn't make it to what I would think is Jericho proper, so I wanted to find out a bit more about it. While I have our sights more on the Waterbury/Waitsfield area, my fiancé wants to consider areas closer to Burlington.
Thanks!

Yes, Jericho is a bedroom community of Burlington. It is fairly rural in nature. Services are in Essex/Essex Junction. There are a couple villages in town. I believe Jericho has its own elementary school, but shares a middle school with Underhill (Browns River Middle School) and for high school the kids go to Mount Mansfield Union High School.
Hopefully someone with a more intimate knowledge of Jericho will chime in.

Rural describes it. Jericho is kinda the hidden backside of Richmond. If you have a good car or truck, don't mind visits by bears and deer, and know how to drive in deep snow, you might like it. Shopping is in Burlington or Williston, and the usual caveats of rural living apply - know how to take care of yourself for ten days if the power goes out at zero degrees F. have an alternate heat source and a good first aid kit, etc. The area borders Bolton Valley, so snow is deeper than many other areas of the state and can stay longer in the spring.
While a lot of the ski crowd and leaf peepers hit route 100 and bypass Jericho, making it quieter, there is more of a focus of the residents on either home or Burlington, rather than building the small town feel you might get in Warren or Waterbury Ctr..

Jericho has the cute little village with Mt Mansfield HS just up the road. As people have mentioned the township has become a suburb of Btown and during rush-hour Rt 15 can be pretty congested.
It is a pretty area and living in Jericho, Underhill or Cambridge are similar. Pleasant Valley is another gorgeous area off the beaton path with the backside of Mt Mansfield looming to the east.

Thanks everyone...hmmm...though I don't mind rural, I'd rather not have to go to Burlington or Essex to get day to day errands done...but perhaps we'll take a drive by to get a feel for it anyway.
I definitely want to be somewhere with good schools (though we have no kids, anything is possible!) and a great sense of community...so far I'm smitten with the Mad River Valley area but am still investigating other areas. I will be working from home, so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know! Thanks!

Hi! Our family has lived in Jericho for the past 22 years. We love the town and would highly recommend it. You have the famous Joe's Snack Bar at your doorstep, the wonderful Jericho Center store which has all those small grocery items you need PLUS cremees. Underhill Center is just 5 miles or so up the road and the store there was voted #1 for cremees in the state. We have an amazing park with hiking trails, concerts and farmer's market in the summer and groomed cross country trails in the winter. The park is FREE! Also 1 mile up the road is the place where one of the best fall festivals is held in Underhill Center.
The schools are awesome. All three of our children graduated from Jericho Elementary, Brown's River Middle School and Mtn. Mansfield High School. The teachers love to teach and it shows. The benefit of living in Jericho is that your kids don't have to travel far to get to the high school. Some of the kids from other towns travel over 25 minutest to get to school.
Jericho is a friendly community that is perfect for families. Seeing that view of Mtn. Mansfield as your drive around town will make your day! Essex Center is 10 minutes away - you have movies, restaurants, fast food and great shops.
One more thing - Casey's hill is the very best winter sliding hill! It is in Underhill Center - just 1 1/2 miles up the road.
Can you tell that I love Jericho?

Thanks for the enthused response!! My fiancé would rather be a bit closer to Burlington whereas I would prefer to be near some good winter sports, so perhaps we'll keep Jericho on our list...it seems the more research I do, the more places we find that would be great to live in. I think it's going to be hard to pick just one place!

What would be the closest skiing area to Jericho? Seems like Jericho is in between Stowe, Sugarbush and Smuggler's Notch, with the edge to Smuggler's? Is that about right?
