That parking lot (and RTe. 108) is closed anywhere from late October/early Novemeber till mid to late May. And some years, you can add a week or two to either.

I dunno. While I like Mt. Mansfield and have been up there a few times, it seems like each time there are more restrictions. The last time a favorite trail was closed, supposedly to protect nesting birds. I'll 100% agree that it is important to stay on the trails to avoid damaging the few plants that can survive up there, but if things continue, I suspect that the entire summit may be off-limits within a few years.

For those who want an experience without the cars, lifts, and tv and radio stations, Camel's Hump has a nice trail to the summit, and is on the Long Trail, so is pretty safe.

For those who dare to go into uncharted territory, Hunger Mountain can be a challenge.

Mansfield does have a lot of history compared to those other mountains. There used to be a hotel on the top, complete with a resident cow to supply fresh milk.

Ditto. The first time hiking Mansfield can be frustrating if you don't expect to find people picknicking and a dude selling hot dogs when you get to the top . We used to hike Camel's Hump regularly, as well as different parts of the LT (not an "end-to-ender," though).

If you're talking about the same mountain, when I was in grade school, we used to hike Mt. Hunger and it's companion, White Rocks.

Miss the mountains!
