We will be driving overnight tonight from Virginia to Vermont. We normally arrive in Brattleboro around 6am. Anyplace around there that might have a kick butt breakfast - or even further north? We are headed up to Waterbury.

Without question, Eatons Sugarhouse off Exit 3 on I-89 (the Bethel exit). Eaton's Sugarhouse - Real Vermont Maple Syrup, Restaurant, Country Gift Store, in Royalton VT It's a down home type of place. This is where locals go to eat. Some tourists find the place. Nothing fancy when you walk in, but you get a great meal.

Thanks for the heads up! We are packing up right now.....but it may be a short trip if we get on the road and find that DC is going to take a harder hit from the hurricane. I work with a local rescue and have animals in my house I'm responsible for.... decisions, decisions.....

Chelsea Royal Diner in West Brattleboro. Great breakfast. They are known for it. And they open very early, too.

Check out their website: http://www.chelsearoyaldiner.com

Another place in Brattleboro I've heard recommended for breakfast is the Backside Cafe, but I haven't had breakfast there. I have eaten there at other times and it's pretty good.

But right now may not be the best time to visit Brattleboro. Because of Whetstone Brook flooding from Tropical Storm Irene, parts of downtown Brattleboro are a mess. I haven't been out today, because of the storm, but I've seen videos online. Brattleboro flooding is even on the news. I saw it on CNN and The Weather Channel.

I have no idea what to expect when I go out tomorrow morning. I have no idea which businesses will be open or closed. West Brattleboro has had a lot of flooding, too. It's heartbreaking.

But I do recommend the Chelsea Royal Diner for breakfast. In view of the flooding, though, I would call first. Their number is on their website.
