Hi all,
My wife and I were planning on spending 8 days in Vermont starting on 9/10. We've been to Vermont before (on our honeymoon) so we had a rough outline on what we wanted to do/visit:

2 days in the Woodstock area
4 days in either Burlington or Stowe
2 days near Waitsfield

Alot of our vacation was going to revolve around touring some breweries, food factories, hiking, etc.

I'm having a hard time determining whether to cancel our vacation altogether. I understand that Woodstock is not possible anymore (Woodstock Inn already canceled our reservation), and other activities will have to be cancelled (i.e. going to the Alchemist or Long Trail Brewery). But others activities (Vermont State Fair) seem to be operating.

So far, the general advice I've heard is avoid Southern VT and you should be okay. But to me, Woodstock and Waitsfield are in central/northern VT and seem to be greatly affected. Advice?

Please don't cancel. You can still visit Vermont and do the things you want: breweries, food, hiking, and more. The Burlington and Stowe areas should be fine for your visit, as are many others.

I recommend calling 1-800-VERMONT (800-837-6668) and visiting http://www.vermontvacation.com/. They'll know which lodging is open and the best places to recreate.

Many roads are already reopening. Some roads are weeks away from opening, but you can avoid those areas.

A town near or in an affected are may not have damage that's apparent to a visitor. Parts of my town that were underwater now look like nothing happened, while other parts are still cleaning out. Woodstock and Waitsfield are not in the same area. Parts of Woodstock are already reopened for business; the Inn was damaged and needs to repair. Waitsfield is another matter, and you'd need to ask.

I hope you'll come and enjoy the heck out of Vermont!

Not only can you tour breweries, some are holding benefit BBQs, like Magic Hat in Burlington, Harpoon in Windsor is raising funds ad donating food to food banks. Long Trail got nailed but they are up and running again and open for visitors.

Vermonters are a hardy lot and you would be surprised how much is back up and running. Great place to stay in Southern VT (Manchester) is Olympian Lodge, hiking the Equinox Trails, etc.

Don't cancel your plans!

The Green Mountain National Forest is closed if you were planning on hiking there (maybe it'll open up some by then but that's impossible to say right now), but state lands are generally open for hiking...

Northern Vermont is largely okay as far as restaurants, inns, etc....

Waitsfield is accessible from the north and in the process of reopening. The Big Picture Theater & Café was undamaged. American Flatbread has reopened.

The alchemist cannery is open. It is just up the road from the brewery.

You might also be here for Siptemberfest at Mad River Glen?
